According to Mark Miles, McLaren could return to IndyCar in the future, although another return in 2017 is unlikely. This follows claims that Fernando Alonso could skip the Singapore Grand Prix to compete in the final race of the 2017 IndyCar Season at Sonoma, although Zak Brown has dismissed these rumours as “completely untrue.”
McLaren return to IndyCar could happen
According to the CEO of IndyCar however, this may not be the end of the story. “We know that there are options for McLaren to return to the Indianapolis 500 next year with Andretti Autosport,” Miles told El Mundeo Deportivo.
“And McLaren is still interested in being a team in the Verizon Indycar series full time, probably not for 2018 but perhaps in 2019. Zak [Brown] keeps asking questions about our schedule,” he added.
Earlier in 2017, McLaren made a one off appearance at the Indy 500 where Fernando Alonso missed the Monaco Grand Prix. In the race that stops America, Alonso got through to the fast nine in qualifying and lined up in fifth for the race. The Spaniard was a candidate for the win in the race, until an ironic engine failure removed him from contention late on. Alonso has also refused to rule out a full-time switch to IndyCar in 2018 as he is weighing up his options for next season due to a difficult time with McLaren-Honda in F1.
