Raffaele Marciello to drive for Trident in Austria

Raffaele Marciello is set to return to the Formula 2 grid this weekend in Austria at the Red Bull Ring where he will race for his former GP2 team, Trident.

Raffaele Marciello to drive for Trident in Austria

Marciello previously competed in Formula 2 (then GP2) from 2014-2016 for Racing Engineering, Trident, and Russian Time, securing a best finish of fourth in the Drivers’ Championship in 2016.

When driving for Trident in 2015, Marciello finished in seventh place in the Drivers’ Championship after securing four podium finishes throughout the season while Stoffel Vandoorne ran away with the championship from Alexander Rossi.

This weekend, the 22 year old will return to the grid to partner Nabil Jeffri at Trident, meaning that he will replace Sergio Canamasas for the ninth and tenth rounds of the 2017 Season. With Marciello driving for the Italian outfit this weekend, it is without doubt that the team will be looking for a large haul of points due to the driver’s proven speed in the series.

In a press release from Trident, Marciello said:  “I’m really proud to be back working with Team Trident after the previous and really positive experience in the 2015 GP2 Series. They proved both competitive and professional throughout the years, a real benchmark in motor sports. I look forward to making my contribution to strengthen the team even further. I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of a Trident-prepared car at Red Bull Ring. It will also be my debut in the revamped FIA Formula 2 Championship.”

This weekend also marks the return of Alexander Albon who was unable to race for ART Grand Prix in Baku after breaking his collarbone in a cycling accident. Among the changes on the grid for races nine and ten in Austria, Johnny Cecotto Jr finds himself without a seat, with Trident’s Sergio Canamasas racing for Rapax this weekend alongside McLaren junior, Nyck de Vries.
