“Take His Head Clean Off His Shoulders” – Ian Garry Predicts Four Rounds of Domination Before Finishing Islam Makhachev at UFC 330

Islam Makhachev’s first welterweight title defense is now official, as the Dagestani champion is set to take on Ian Garry in the main event of UFC 330. The highly anticipated showdown, which had been the subject of heavy speculation for days, was recently confirmed by the UFC for August 15 at Philadelphia’s Xfinity Mobile Arena. For Garry, the title opportunity is the culmination of a vision he has been manifesting for years.

The Irish contender has made it clear that he believes he possesses the skill set to shock the MMA world and become the first fighter to defeat Makhachev since 2015. The matchup also adds another chapter to the long-running Ireland vs. Dagestan rivalry, with Garry determined to succeed where fellow Irish stars Conor McGregor and Paul Hughes fell short by defeating a Dagestani standout on MMA’s biggest stage.

That confidence was on full display during his recent signing press conference with Matchroom Talent Agency, where Garry offered a striking prediction for how he hopes to capture UFC gold. Rather than seeking a quick finish, the undefeated Irishman said he wants to dominate the champion over multiple rounds before ending the fight decisively.

He said, “Me, my ideal scenario, I want a fourth-round finish. I don’t want any early knockout, because then there’s ifs, buts, maybes, there’s excuses.”

‘The Future’ explained that he wants to leave no doubt about the result by controlling the fight for 20 minutes before securing the stoppage. He added, “I want four rounds of domination and in that fourth round, I’m going to tell everybody, I’m going to do it now, and then I’m going to go in, and I’m going to finish him. I’m going to open the door, I’m going to walk him into my traps and then take his head clean off his shoulders.”

The prediction is undoubtedly ambitious as Garry’s last finish came against Daniel Rodriguez at UFC Charlotte in May 2023, and the majority of his victories have come on the scorecards, with nine of his 17 professional wins and seven of his 10 UFC victories ending in decisions. Even so, his recent performances have solidified him as one of the division’s top contenders and earned him the biggest opportunity of his career against the reigning welterweight champion.

Garry enters UFC 330 with a 10-1 UFC record, his only loss coming against the undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov in December 2024. Despite suffering the setback, the Irishman achieved something no previous opponent had managed—he became the first fighter to go the distance with the Kazakh standout and avoid being finished.

Since that defeat, Garry has further strengthened his credentials as a legitimate title challenger, earning back-to-back victories over Carlos Prates and former welterweight champion Belal Muhammad. However, the challenge awaiting Garry is unlike any he has faced before. Makhachev is widely considered the best fighter in the sport today and currently occupies the No. 1 spot in the UFC pound-for-pound rankings.

The Dagestani superstar is riding a remarkable 16-fight winning streak, tying Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in UFC history, and has not suffered a defeat since 2015. His last loss came at UFC 192, where Adriano Martins knocked him out in just his second UFC appearance. Moreover, he has cemented his place among the greatest lightweights of all time by setting a divisional record with four successful title defenses, defeating elite opponents such as Alexander Volkanovski, Dustin Poirier, and Renato Moicano.

After ruling the lightweight division, Makhachev vacated the 155-pound title in pursuit of a second championship and successfully captured welterweight gold at UFC 322, earning a dominant five-round decision victory over Jack Della Maddalena in November last year. With momentum on his side and unwavering self-belief, Garry has every reason to back himself heading into the biggest fight of his career. Yet standing across from him will be a champion whose resume has made him one of the most formidable fighters the sport has ever seen.
