CBS Sports, like every other sports media company, is awaiting the start of NFL training camp. As every team in the league currently is on hiatus from organized team activities, there is not much news coming out of any NFL franchise. As such, analysts are composing content to help fans prepare for the upcoming season.
One recent article that was published by CBS attempted to identify the biggest roster hole on every NFL team. Most of them, of course, made sense. However, their pick for the biggest hole on the Green Bay Packers roster may not be entirely accurate.
CBS Sports claims the Green Bay Packers do not have enough quality cornerbacks
According to CBS Sports, Green Bay’s biggest roster hole is at the cornerback position. They justify this claim, writing:
“Free agent acquisition Nate Hobbs did not deliver the season Green Bay anticipated, and Keisean Nixon, Carrington Valentine are in line to start again. It is a gamble, as is defensive lineman Javon Hargrave tapping into the fountain of youth.”
One can certainly understand the selection of the Packers cornerback position as one of grave concern. Last year, Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine woefully underperformed. Each gave up passer ratings when targeted well over 100, yet somehow Nixon was named to the Pro Bowl (probably thanks to his 17 passes deflected).
That being said, Green Bay used their first pick in the 2026 NFL Draft (which was in the second round) on cornerback Brandon Cisse. They also used a sixth rounder on Domani Jackson, and signed Benjamin St. Juste in free agency.
Clearly, they are banking on their young talent in addition to bounce-back seasons from Nixon and Valentine to carry the room. It is questionable, for sure, but is it the biggest roster hole on the team?
Clearly, CBS Sports thinks it is. However, one must also consider Green Bay’s running back room. Three-time Pro Bowler Josh Jacobs is coming off of an injury-plagued seasons in 2025, and he is another year older. What is more, he was arrested earlier this off-season on domestic violence charges, though no indictment has been filed yet.
Behind Jacobs, Green Bay has Marshawn Lloyd, their third-round pick from 2024, who has only been healthy enough to play just one NFL game in his career. They allowed Emanuel Wilson to walk in free agency, taking away the reliable backup they had for the last two years.
Chris Brooks is their third running back, but they have no intention of using him often in the run game. He is a great blocking back and an adequate pass catcher, but is not the kind of player who can assume an RB2 role.
Due to these factors, one must seriously consider that CBS Sports may have it wrong with their selection. Yes, cornerback is a huge question mark on Green Bay’s roster; but running back may be a bigger one.
