World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler inadvertently drew some attention to himself when handing Rory McIlroy his Masters trophy on Sunday. The 28-year-old handed over the green jacket to his rival, the world No. 2, inside the Butler Cabin at the Augusta National. Scheffler immediately left the frame being shown on the live broadcast, prompting speculations from fans about what actually transpired..
However, the 2022 and 2024 Masters winner has revealed that although he wanted to get out of the frame quickly in order to avoid being a part of McIlroy’s moment, he only meant it in a good way, and it wasn’t ill-willed.
Scheffler Wanted McIlroy To Have His Moment
Scheffler spoke to the media on Wednesday ahead of this week’s RBC Heritage and revealed that he didn’t want to take part in the moment because the moment belonged to McIlroy and he wanted the Northern Irishman to enjoy his moment to the fullest.
McIlroy made history on Sunday when he became just the sixth player to complete the career Grand Slam. The 35-year-old defeated Justin Rose in a play-off at the Augusta National to win his first major since the 2014 Open Championship. It was a truly momentous occasion for the Irishman who fell to his knees after being overwhelmed with emotions following his victory.
“It was such an emotional day for him,” Scheffler said. “I kind of just tried to stay out of the way and basically just get the jacket on without embarrassing him or myself.”
Scheffler Reveals How He Felt Watching McIlroy Win The Masters
Scottie Scheffler also revealed how it felt for him to watch the world No. 2 complete his career Grand Slam on Sunday, as the 35-year-old could not hold back his tears following the dramatic play-off victory over Justin Rose.
“I got to watch the whole celebration,” Scheffler added. “I watched the finish and it was really cool for me to be able to see because I don’t have the understanding of what it’s like to be asked about the career Grand Slam, but I have like a small understanding of what it’s like to be asked like, ‘Hey you’ve accomplished this but you haven’t accomplished that,’ and it can be very taxing on people sometimes. So it was cool to be able to see Rory get the job done.”
Scheffler himself is no stranger to winning the green jacket after emerging victorious in 2022 and 2024. However, the 28-year-old has nothing but praise for McIlroy who ended his long wait for a major in a thrilling grand finale on Sunday. Scheffler will now shift his attention to the RBC Heritage which takes place this week.
