Ryder Cup Race Heats Up: Who’s Locked In and Who’s Falling Out?

As the countdown to the 2025 Ryder Cup ticks on, the battle for automatic qualification is heating up. With only a few events left before the teams are finalized, players on both sides of the Atlantic are jostling for qualification positions. While some are clinging to their spots, others are making late surges, and a few big names are in danger of missing out.

US Team Current Standings

For Team USA, Scottie Scheffler is in a league of his own. With over 21,000 points, he has locked in the top spot and will be the leader of the American team. Xander Schauffele is safely in second place, while JJ Spaun has risen to third place following his victory at the U.S. Open. Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas hold the fourth and fifth spots, while Collin Morikawa occupies the final spot in the top six.

However, the standings below sixth place are extremely tight. Russell Henley, currently in seventh, is only a few points behind Morikawa. A strong finish in the next event could easily push him into an automatic qualifying spot. Ben Griffin and Maverick McNealy are also within striking distance, but they’ll need top finishes to make a serious move.

Patrick Cantlay and Jordan Spieth, both past Ryder Cup mainstays, find themselves on the outside looking in. Sitting outside the top ten, they’ll need significant results or will have to rely on captain’s picks. Keegan Bradley, who is captaining the team, is ranked seventeenth. While he’s eligible to pick himself if needed, his focus seems to be on selecting the best possible team rather than making a surprise return to play.

Europe Team Current Standings

Rory McIlroy has clinched the first automatic spot and will once again lead the European charge. Tyrrell Hatton is a distant second behind him, while Shane Lowry is not far behind in third. Robert MacIntyre sits in fourth position, giving him a real shot at making the team on points alone. Sepp Straka and Rasmus Højgaard occupy the fifth and sixth spots.

But like the Americans, the European standings are still open. Tommy Fleetwood, Ludvig Åberg, Justin Rose, and Viktor Hovland are all hovering just outside the automatic qualifying zone. Each of them has Ryder Cup experience and solid form, but they’ll need to improve their rankings quickly to avoid leaving their fate in the hands of captain Luke Donald. Aaron Rai and Jon Rahm are in danger of missing out as they occupy 16th and 17th on the standings.

As both teams look toward finalizing their six automatic qualifiers, tension continues to build. For players just outside the cut line, every birdie, every finish, and every point counts. While some are safely in, others must deliver under pressure or face the uncertainty of waiting for a captain’s decision.
