R&A Warns Fans: Abuse Players at The Open and You’ll Be Removed

The R&A has introduced a new code of conduct for spectators at the 2026 Open Championship, making it clear that anyone who abuses players or behaves in a disruptive manner could be removed from Royal Birkdale.

The new rules come after growing concerns about fan behavior at professional golf events. Players have increasingly spoken about heckling, gambling-related abuse, and spectators deliberately trying to distract golfers during tournaments.

More than 300,000 spectators are expected to attend this week’s Open Championship, and the R&A wants to make sure the focus stays on the golf. Officials say the new policy is designed to protect players, fans, volunteers, and the traditions of the championship.

The R&A Introduces Tougher Rules for Spectators

R&A Chief Executive Mark Darbon said tournament officials, marshals, security staff, and volunteers will monitor spectators throughout the championship. Anyone who repeatedly breaks the rules or seriously disrupts play could be asked to leave the course.

Darbon explained that the new policy is not simply a reaction to a single incident. Instead, it is part of a broader effort to prevent poor behavior before it becomes a bigger problem.

The R&A believes action is necessary following several recent incidents. Defending Open champion Scottie Scheffler said he heard comments that were “very far over the line” during the final round at Royal Portrush last year. Brian Harman also faced jeers during his Open victory.

During last year’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, European players faced constant abuse from sections of the crowd. More recently, Wyndham Clark received hostile treatment during the final round of the U.S. Open, with several players suggesting that sports betting may have encouraged some fans to behave poorly.

Darbon also stressed that while the R&A wants to attract younger audiences through social media and digital platforms, it does not want to lose the traditions that have made The Open one of golf’s biggest events.

The New Rules Every Fan Must Follow

The new “Open Commitment” asks spectators to respect players, fellow fans, and the golf course. It includes 10 clear rules.

Fans must remain quiet and still while players prepare to hit and play their shots. They must not shout at players during play or ask for autographs outside designated areas. Spectators are encouraged to celebrate great shots respectfully and follow instructions from marshals and security staff.

Mobile phones must remain on silent mode. Personal photography is allowed only if it does not disturb play, while video recording, audio recording, and flash photography during competition are prohibited.

The R&A has also adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward threatening behavior. Abuse based on gender, race, age, disability, religion, or sexuality, along with foul language, harassment, or intimidation directed at players, officials, volunteers, or other spectators, will not be tolerated.

Alcohol is not allowed inside grandstands, and any behavior that disrupts the experience of others could lead to immediate removal from the course.
