The R&A has announced a dramatic twist for The Open Championship. Starting in 2026, players who narrowly miss out on qualifying will get one final opportunity to book their place in golf’s oldest major through a new event called the “Last-Chance Qualifier.” This new addition follows the same style as PGA Tour Monday qualifiers, where players compete for spots in regular events.

Mark Darbon Reveals Reason Behind ‘Last Chance’ Qualifier
The Last-Chance Qualifier is scheduled to take place at Royal Birkdale, the host venue for the 2026 Open Championship, on Monday, July 13, 2026, just days before the first round of the tournament. Up to 12 players will compete over 18 holes, and the winner will earn the final spot in the 156-player field for The Open. There are no second chances, no ties, and no complicated calculations. It’s winner takes all, with everything on the line.
The R&A introduced this idea to add more drama to Open week and to give fans more golf to enjoy. Mark Darbon, the R&A’s Chief Executive, said the decision came after listening to fans. Many asked for more action and more ways to get involved during tournament week.
“The Open is one of the world’s great sporting events and recognized worldwide for the special atmosphere generated by the tens of thousands of fans who attend the championship each year,” said new R&A CEO Mark Darbon said in a statement. “We have asked them how we can make their experience of attending the Open even more enjoyable and they have been clear…they want more live golf, more opportunities to engage with the traditions of golf’s original championship and more activities onsite to watch, listen and play. As a result, we have introduced new features, which we believe will elevate the Open for fans, particularly on the days leading up to the championship.”
R&A Also Introduce Heroes Classic
The Last-Chance Qualifier is not the only new event at Royal Birkdale in 2026. The R&A has also announced the “Heroes Classic,” a fun exhibition that will take place on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. The Heroes Classic will feature past Open champions and special guests. It offers fans a more relaxed, light-hearted event before the serious action begins.

These two new events mark a clear effort by the R&A to refresh Open week as they bid to attract more fans, create more memorable moments, and make The Open even more engaging. The Last-Chance Qualifier could also help players who suffer bad luck during regular qualifying events and provides a safety net for those who miss out by a single stroke or who fall victim to tricky conditions.
