Bryson DeChambeau endured a frustrating outing at the PGA Championship as he narrowly missed out on winning the Wanamaker Trophy after finishing tied for second. The 31-year-old opened up on some of the things he would love to change ahead of the US Open next month as he reflected on his performance in his post-round press conference.
DeChambeau Eying Changes Ahead Of U.S. Open
DeChambeau reminisced on his PGA Championship performance after World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler clinched the title. The American revealed his frustration with the golf ball and stated that he would be working on making some changes ahead of the U.S. Open.
“I think that’s really what I’m going to be looking at now along with some equipment stuff to just make myself a little more precise the next time so we don’t have what happened this week happen,” he said. “What I really think needs to happen, being pretty transparent here, is just to get a golf ball that flies a little straighter. Everybody talks about how straight the golf ball flies. Well, upwards of 190 like Rory and myself, it’s actually quite difficult to control the golf ball,” he added.
DeChambeau also revealed that he was looking to make the changes between now and the end of the season and added that he’s determined to work his “butt off” to make the changes happen, as he intends to keep on finding something new as he’s excited about improving.
Despite DeChambeau’s comments about the golf ball, some fans didn’t see his point of view and voiced their criticism on social media, urging the American to take responsibility for failing to win the tournament.
“Never seen a better argument for the rollback of the golf ball,” one X user posted.
Another fan was more mean in his comments about the LIV Golf player. “What a loser. Blaming it on manufacturing. Lost a lot of respect for Bryson when he starts blaming the golf ball,” the fan posted on X.
How DeChambeau Lost The PGA Championship
Bryson DeChambeau was one of the favourites to lift the PGA Championship going into Friday’s first round. The 31-year-old was in a good position going into the final round on Sunday but endured a difficult time on the greens, surrendering a strong position. He carded a round of 75 and settled in T5 earlier in the tournament. Despite being close to winning the tournament, he carded a final round of 70 and ultimately ended up tied for second.
Scottie Scheffler stole the show as he won his third Major event at the Quail Hollow Golf Club on Sunday after he extended his third-round lead. Harris English also put in an impressive performance in the final round as he shot 65 to jump 34 spots on the leaderboard, finishing tied for second with DeChambeau and Davis Riley.
Despite DeChambeau’s disappointing finish to the PGA Championship, the 31-year-old has now finished in the top six for the fifth time in his last six major starts.
“It seemed like it didn’t go my way all week and I’m pretty disappointed. But this is brewing a fire in my stomach and it’s gonna make me want to fight harder and get after the U.S. Open again this year.
