Controversial Team USA Ryder Cup Shirt Sparks Fury Following McIlroy Mix-Up

An image of a Team USA Ryder Cup shirt, appearing to feature Rory McIlroy’s silhouette, has left fans expressing disbelief on social media. With just two weeks to go until the start of the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, Team USA is already facing a huge blunder as they aim to reclaim the Ryder Cup from Europe.

Team USA in Awkward T-shirt Fumble

Team USA is dealing with an unexpected controversy after fans noticed a conspicuous design error in its official $65 Ralph Lauren T-shirt from the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup Collection. The shirt, available on the Ryder Cup online store as part of the U.S. team’s official collection, features bold “USA RYDER CUP 2025” lettering paired with the classic Ralph Lauren pony logo on the back.

However, the golfer silhouette printed on the front has sent fans into a frenzy. Rather than representing a generic player, the pose—a high-finish swing—looks almost uncannily like that of Rory McIlroy, one of Europe’s best golfers. The Northern Irishman will be playing for Europe in his eighth consecutive Ryder Cup at Bethpage. McIlroy has been in top form this year, winning the Masters to become only the sixth player to complete the Career Grand Slam. The 36-year-old also captured the Players Championship and the Irish Open last week.

What adds to the awkwardness is the context surrounding this year’s Ryder Cup. Team Europe secured a dominant five-point victory in the 2023 edition, and Team USA is desperately aiming to regain the trophy. With such a fierce rivalry, a slip-up like this feels especially ironic. And since the shirt is officially marketed to rally fan support, featuring the wrong “team” seems like a branding misfire with serious PR implications.

“Is Rory Switching Sides?” Fans Tear Into T-shirt Mishap

Social media lit up almost immediately after popular golf account NUCLR Golf shared the post on X. Some found the awkward fashion fumble hilarious, others were furious, and many simply could not believe what they were seeing.

“Appears to be???? That IS Rory. Unreal,” a fan wrote, sounding genuinely confused at the error. “Is Rory switching sides? @TrackingRory,” another fan asked humorously.

Some fans believe Team Europe will be having a laugh with the free publicity Team USA has inadvertently given them. “Surely they weren’t this f***ing stupid. Euros are going to have a field day with this,” a fan wrote.

“This is probably a crappy AI art generator instead of paying a designer,” another fan said. Some believe the image was created by an intern, adding to the controversy.

The shirt remains available for purchase, and as of now, neither Ralph Lauren nor the Ryder Cup organizers have released any statement or explanation.

With the Ryder Cup just two weeks away, the shirt meant to fire up Team USA fans instead gave Europe an unexpected laugh — and left Ralph Lauren scrambling to manage an awkward PR mess.
