Augusta National and R&A Introduce Six New Qualification Pathways for The Masters and The Open

Augusta National and the R&A have both announced plans to align aspects of the qualification criteria for the Masters Tournament and The Open, awarding invitations to winners and top finishers of select national opens while removing US PGA Tour fall tournament winners from the eligibility list.

New Qualifications Pathway Designed to Reward Top Talents

Golf fans have long regarded The Masters as one of the most exclusive tournaments in the sport. Until now, the qualification system included PGA Tour fall event winners as part of the entry categories. This category has now been replaced by six national opens. From 2026, the champions of the Scottish Open, Spanish Open, Japan Open, Hong Kong Open, Australian Open, and South African Open will receive exemptions into both The Masters and The Open.

Meanwhile, the Open, organized by the R&A and staged every July, already has a long-running qualification system known as the Open Qualifying Series, and these six events will now be included in that system as well.

“The Masters Tournament has long recognized the significance of having international representation among its invitees,” Fred Ridley, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and The Masters Tournament, said. “We, along with the R&A, have a shared commitment to the global game and are proud to work together. Today’s announcement strengthens our organizations’ collective vision of rewarding top talent around the world who rise to the top of historic national open championships.”

The winners of these events will join past champions, top-ranked players, and other exempt golfers at Augusta and at The Open. For The Masters, this marks a rare alignment with the R&A, as both bodies are working together to strengthen qualification routes and ensure global representation.

Changes to Take Effect From 2026

The changes will begin with the 2026 Masters Tournament, scheduled for April 9–12, 2026, which will be the 90th edition of the event. The 154th Open Championship will follow at Royal Birkdale from July 16–19, 2026. In September, the R&A will publish its full qualifying schedule for The Open, including 15 tournaments across 13 countries, demonstrating how widely it casts the qualifying net.

R&A Chief Executive Mark Darbon described the change as a way to bring consistency across the two majors while opening doors for players who might otherwise miss out. “We take great pride in the range of qualification routes we offer to players around the world through the Open Qualifying Series,” Darbon said. “This creates an outstanding opportunity for players in all parts of the world to qualify, and we firmly believe this will continue to enrich the quality of the fields in both major championships.”

These changes mark a new era in major championship access, giving more players worldwide a chance to compete on golf’s biggest stages.
