Lucas Glover Explains Why He Supports PGA Tour’s Sweeping 2028 Overhaul

Lucas Glover has explained why he supports the PGA Tour’s major changes planned for 2028 but admits there are still important details that need to be addressed before the new system begins.

Glover, a PGA Tour veteran and chairman of the Player Advisory Council, said the tour is moving in the right direction with its new two-series model. Under the current plan, players competing in the top-level Championship Series will not be allowed to drop down and play Challenger Series events. This has led to criticism from both players and fans.

The new structure was created by the Future Competition Committee and has already been approved for the 2028 season. It introduces a promotion and relegation system similar to European football, where players move between the two tours based on their performances throughout the season.

Glover Says More Work Is Still Needed

Glover said the overall direction of the changes is positive, but he acknowledged that several parts of the plan still need to be clarified before the launch in 2028. He also repeated his concern about the rule preventing Championship Series players from competing in Challenger Series events.

“But I think for what we’re trying to do and what we’ve been told we need to do, I think we’re heading in the right direction,” Glover said about the overhaul. “Is there some clarity needed? Yes, but we’ve got this foundation laid really early for a reason. Change is hard, but sometimes it’s necessary and it was shown to us that it was necessary. The goal here is to put the best PGA Tour possible in 2028. There’s still a lot of story left to be written but I think we’re on the right track.”

How the New PGA Tour System Will Work

The Championship Series will feature the PGA Tour’s top players competing in about 23 to 24 events each season. Every event will have a minimum purse of $20 million, 120-player fields, and a redesigned postseason.

The Challenger Series will serve as the main route for players looking to earn a place among the tour’s best. It will include at least 20 tournaments, each offering a minimum purse of $4 million and fields of 144 players.

Promotion and relegation will be based on season-long points. Around 20 players are expected to earn promotion from the Challenger Series to the Championship Series every year, while others will move in the opposite direction depending on their results.
