Tavian Mayo’s name has floated around Mountaineer recruiting circles for months. The prior staff targeted him early. And the turnover in staff after Dana Holgorsen left for Houston and Head Coach Neal Brown replaced him days later did little to stall that momentum. In fact, the staff turnover may have helped. Excitement has surrounded the program since Brown took over, and that certainly didn’t hurt Mayo’s interest in West Virginia. As a result, Mayo chooses the Mountaineers on National Signing Day.
Coach Brown wasted little time filling in critical pieces of his coaching staff in Morgantown. One early addition was Al Pogue, who followed Brown from Troy. Pogue is an Alabama native who has traditionally recruited in both Alabama and Georgia. Pogue has also coached cornerbacks for years. His group certainly performed well in Troy. Pogue’s hiring certainly inspires confidence that the Mountaineers look to build a strong secondary. His hire also suggests that the Mountaineers look to continue building a Georgia pipeline under the new staff.
Enter Tavian Mayo, Georgia native, and speedy cornerback who has combines quickness, agility, and an admirable work ethic to make play after play. In fact, his junior highlight film on Hudl begins with an impressive 101-yard pick-6 in which Mayo shows impressive moves.
It’s certainly a nice play to begin a highlight reel. Mayo is also a vocal leader, as shown here.

Mayo has a definite desire to prove his detractors wrong, and that will serve the Mountaineers well for years.
