One of the recruits who has been verbally committed to Texas Tech the longest has now made it official. With the signing of Maurion Horn, this four-star out of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma leads the 2022 recruiting class for the Red Raiders as the lone four-star commit.
Recruited By Two Head Coaches
A national 250 ranked player, Horn has played at running back, wide receiver, cornerback, and returner on special teams. At the time of his verbal commitment, Horn held 12 total offers, including Arkansas, Baylor, Iowa State, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Texas, and USC. What role Horn will play for the Red Raiders has yet to be determined.
Horn actually provided his verbal commitment to Texas Tech back on July 3rd before the 2021 season even started. Even with the firing of Matt Wells, new head coach Joey McGuire hit the ground running to ensure he not only kept the 2022 recurring class intact but to build on it with Horn as the centerpiece.
Maruiron Horn Can Play Anywhere
If Horn does join the offensive side of the Red Raider attack, it is unclear exactly what role he will fill in new offensive coordinator Zach Kittley’s offense. Kittley’s system grabs all of the headlines with the production out of his quarterbacks. But in 13 games this season as Western Kentucky’s offensive coordinator, they averaged 24.7 rushing attempts a game. There are three running backs who saw touches this year for the Red Raiders. All three could come back next season.
With the likely departure of Erik Ezukanma, as well as two other senior wide receivers, Horn could find a way to find early rotation in the wide receiver corps. There is an equal opportunity on the defensive side of the ball. Texas Tech is losing two senior defensive backs. It will only be two sophomores he will be competing with for playing time.
Whatever role Maurion Horn plays for the Red Raiders, he has an opportunity to make an immediate impact. His overall athleticism and versatility provide a major piece for McGuire and the depth of this Texas Tech team.
