Jaylen Reed is one of likely three recruits out of Detroit, Michigan to sign an NLI to attend Penn State on Wednesday. The four-star safety chose Penn State over Michigan State, Maryland, Indiana, and Florida to name a few. In total, the Detroit product had 33 offers. He committed to the Nittany Lions on April 9th, one day before twin brother prospects out of Detroit; Kalen King and Kobe King.
Jaylen Reed Signs NLI to Attend Penn State
The four-star safety will join a young Penn State secondary that is potentially only losing three players to graduation. He is listed at six-foot and 190 pounds. Reed totaled 119 tackles, 11 for loss, in 2019. In addition, he had six sacks from the safety position. He has the speed for the position, also running track in high school. He competes in the 110 hurdle event. 247Sports Composite has Reed as the ninth-ranked recruit out of Michigan. Further, as the 17th ranked safety in the nation. In contrast, Rivals ranks Reed as the 10th best product out of Michigan and the 22nd ranked safety in the nation.
Reed is a hard-hitter that is not afraid of contact. This is something that the Nittany Lions like on their defense. Former Penn State safety Marcus Allen had 71 total tackles his senior year, down from 110 during his junior year, and 10 for loss over his last two seasons in Blue and White. The safety position has been lacking consistency a little bit over the last few seasons since Allen’s departure for the NFL so Reed’s ability to be consistent will be key.
