The LSU record setting season continued Saturday against Arkansas. The Tigers became the first team in the SEC to have a 4,000 yard passer, two 1,000 yard receivers, and a 1,000 yard receiver in the same season. Much of the credit for the success goes to Joe Brady and Steve Ensminger for implementing the new schemes and play calling.
LSU Record Setting Season Continues
Joe Burrow
The Heisman hopeful has cemented his legacy as the best quarterback in LSU history. It has been one record broken after another this year. First, he broke the single-game passing touchdown record at LSU. Then, he set the record for passing yards in a season for the Tigers. Now, he’s four touchdowns away from the single-season SEC passing touchdown record. On top of that, he isn’t many yards away from the single-season yardage record in the SEC. But, not all of the credit can go to Burrow. His receivers, tight ends, and running backs have all contributed to his magnificent season. The best quarterback in Tigers’ program history? More record-shattering performances are in his sights.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire
Clyde Edwards-Helaire has done his job in the LSU backfield in 2019. He started off sluggish, but picked up the pace in October. With a solid outing against Alabama and another against Arkansas, Edwards-Helaire has eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark. The junior tailback has a big choice to make after the season. Does he leave to the NFL or return in 2020 for his senior season? Whatever he chooses, the fact is that Edwards-Helaire has cemented his place in LSU history as one of the best running backs to wear the purple and gold.
Receiving Trio
Justin Jefferson has emerged onto the scene in 2019. Playing alongside Terrace Marshall and Ja’Marr Chase has given Jefferson the opportunity to develop as a player. Chase set the SEC record for receiving touchdowns in a season. Jefferson and Chase are both 1000-yard receivers. Marshall has become a great asset to the receiving group in 2019. Though he was out for a few games with a foot injury, his production picked up right where he left off. This trio of receivers for LSU could make the claim as the best receivers to come through Baton Rouge. But that’s a story for another day. Don’t take away anything from any of these players. They’re all very talented and are playing on the best team in college football.
The Son Of A Legend
Thaddeus Moss became a household name this season. The son of NFL legend Randy Moss, he has taken his talents and used them well this year. The production from the tight end position has given the LSU offense an extra lethal weapon. His contributions to LSU’s record setting season are another reason why this offense is so electric and fun to watch. Moss’ big body and ability to catch the ball and block for receivers makes him a great player. Moss owns the record for most receptions by a tight end in school history.
LSU Record Setting Season: Offensive Production
On top of all those records, LSU’s offense set the school record for most yards in a single season with 6,172 in just 11 games. This isn’t the usual pro-style, balanced attack LSU offense. The LSU record setting season has a lot of numbers and many contributors within it. But, take nothing away from the coaches that are making this happen. Ed Orgeron, Steve Ensminger, and Joe Brady knew before the season what the offense could be like. Surely they never imagined numbers like the ones that these players have produced.
The Tigers have one regular-season game left, at home against Texas A&M on Saturday. After that, the Tigers will meet the Georgia Bulldogs for an SEC Championship in Atlanta. Buckle up, this offense will continue to go on a drive.
