Leave no doubt, the SEC always produces top NFL talent. Specifically, on the defensive side of the ball, linebackers have been one of the strongest group units that have had players drafted. Today, we’ll take a look at the top five linebackers in the conference for 2019.
Top Five SEC Linebackers for 2019
Dylan Moses, Alabama
Moses comes into 2019 being one of Alabama’s best overall players. The standout linebacker has produced highlight-worthy film during his career with the Crimson Tide. Moses has played with a strong edge to his game. His ability to play all over the field in coverage gives him the recognition he deserves. In 2018, Moses finished with 86 tackles, which was a team-high for last season. The coaching staff has called him a “freak athlete” because of his unique abilities to play everywhere on the field.
Setting the Standard: SEC Dominance
Michael Divinity, LSU
Divinity will most likely be LSU’s leader on defense in 2019. Not just on the field, but in the locker room as well. Taking over for Devin White, Divinity portrays every attribute that a true LSU Tiger should bring to the table. His ability to shut down opposing receivers and get to the quarterback has helped him shape into the role he’ll have this season. In 2018, he finished with 54 tackles and tied the team-high for sacks with five. His senior year will be special.
Leo Lewis, Mississippi State
Lewis is perhaps one of the best overall players in college football. He has led the Bulldogs’ defense for the past few seasons and looks to continue that in 2019. With a new head coach and an optimistic team, Lewis could win a few awards once the season is over.
K’Lavon Chaisson, LSU
Chaisson had his 2018 season cut short due to a knee injury. Coming back strong in 2019, he will be a factor on LSU’s defense. His ability to play on the defensive line and at linebacker gives him a strong edge on this list. If he can remain healthy, Chaisson could have a strong breakout season for Dave Aranda’s defense.
Jacob Phillips, LSU
Phillips is another potential breakout candidate at the position. He makes the list over Eroll Thompson of Mississippi State just by an edge. Phillips’ tape reveals all that fans need to know about him. Matching up beside Divinity and Chaisson will in return mature Phillips into a stronger player. The third part of the trio of linebackers at LSU gives them a boost at the position. He had a strong 2018 campaign, and he’s looking to repeat that success this season. He provides the Tigers with versatility at the position, along with Divinity and Chaisson. Aranda’s linebackers are some of the best in the country.
