Myles Brennan is entering his redshirt sophomore season as a member of the LSU Football team. The highly-touted quarterback is competing with senior Joe Burrow for the starting spot once again. To many LSU fans, Myles Brennan deserves more playing time to show off his skills. With new offensive coordinator Joe Brady calling plays, things may look different in 2019.
Myles Brennan Deserves More Playing Time at LSU
The faithful Tigers fan base believes that Brennan has deserved more playing time from the beginning. In his freshman season in 2017, Brennan saw action in a few games. Matt Canada was the play-caller then, and the offense was in somewhat of a bad state. Even into 2018, Brennan saw limited action. Many thought he would see more playing time, but the choice to redshirt him last season could prove to be a good thing for LSU. 2019 could be different, however. With Brady calling plays, and a two-quarterback system can work with the new offensive scheme. Should Ed Orgeron and Brady want to test it, giving Brennan more field action could help his growth as a football player. The longer he sits behind Burrow, the more experience he gets. However, seeing the field some games would help as well.
Being patient has allowed Myles to learn the playbook more. With Brady’s new scheme, using multiple quarterbacks could work. Although, LSU’s history of using two-quarterbacks isn’t all that great. Go back to the Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee years. The Tigers made the BCS National Championship in 2011, which even garnered attention from Super Bowl betting experts, but the passing game was at a down point. Turn the clock to 2019, and things are totally different. Brennan can accompany Burrow in many ways, and should be included in some of the packages on the offense. If not, he’ll have to wait until 2020 to give Tigers fans what they really want.
New Two-Quarterback System?
Can a two-quarterback system work in Baton Rouge? With Brady being the play-caller, his scheme is more pass-heavy. Which in LSU’s case here is a good thing. Utilizing Burrow as the main starter is most likely a given at this point. But, Brennan has the skills to become a talented and mature quarterback. Under the mentor ship of Brady, Brennan can become the player LSU fans have long awaited. When he arrived at LSU in 2017, he was a phenom. He didn’t commit to LSU to sit on the bench and be a backup. Though he’s learning, the process has been drug out too far. It’s time for Brennan to see more action on the field.
Even if it’s a run-pass option style, using two quarterbacks could work out well for the Tigers. But, many believe that Brennan deserves a better role in this new-look LSU offense. The scheme fits his skill set well. Despite having to wait his turn, the LSU faithful think the wait will help the star in the long run. The redshirt-sophomore is being patient for his chance. And that’s the one thing that is helping him. Being patient has given Myles Brennan the guidance he needed to become a mature quarterback for when he is called upon. Whenever that may be, it will be time to show the college football world what they have been missing. LSU hasn’t had a “more than average” quarterback in a very, very long time. Maybe the one has finally been found in Brennan.
The Future of LSU Football
The skills and attributes that Brennan possess are what makes him such a touted player. Coming out of high school, he was highly-ranked. Out of Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, Brennan chose the Tigers as his school of choice. Heading into his now redshirt-sophomore year, QB2 is trying to make a name for himself in the Purple and Gold. He can only do that if the coaching staff puts him on the field during games. Even if he only plays in the lower-tier out of conference games, getting him the reps he needs would be a huge step for his growth. Orgeron has always praised Brennan for his athletic ability throwing the ball. He may not be a great runner, but Brennan can certainly throw great passes. During the practices and spring games, Brennan has showcased his long-ball skills. That is something the Tigers need in the passing game.
Myles Brennan became the future of LSU Football when he stepped on campus in 2017. His abilities had the coaching staff raving about him. Orgeron and staff were heavy on his recruitment. His commitment brought a sense of joy to the fan base. But having to wait his turn is not something he saw coming. Many thought he would come in and start as soon as 2018 after Danny Etling left. That wasn’t the case, and here we are still waiting for Brennan’s full arrival. When his time comes, Brennan is going to light it up in Baton Rouge.
