Josh Allen Drafted Seventh By Jacksonville In NFL Draft

After going the last two years with no players chosen the Kentucky Football program bounced back in a big way. All-American Edge Rusher Josh Allen was drafted seventh by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round.

During his senior campaign in Lexington Allen set a single season record with 17 sacks. In addition his 31.5 sacks broke Oliver Barnett’s career mark. Allen won nearly every post-season award following his record breaking campaign. He provides even more impact to a Jaguar defense which ranked 5th in the NFL in total yards allowed in 2018. However their 37 sacks only put them 22nd in the league. A player the caliber of Allen can only enhance those stats next season.

Allen is the highest pick for the Wildcats’ program since Dewayne Robertson went 4th in 2003 to the New York Jets. The last time the Cats had a player taken in the first round was Bud Dupree. He went with the 22nd pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Problems With The League

It wasn’t a totally worry free day for the University of Kentucky. The athletic department  put up a huge billboard in downtown Nashville to help celebrate Allen and the contributions he made to the program.

After complaining about the NFL logo in the bottom right the league ordered the banner taken down. However they found a new spot on the digital board outside the Bridgestone Arena. Not only does it feature Allen but three other potential Kentucky draft picks, Lonnie Johnson, Mike Edwards and Benny Snell.

After going to the AFC Championship Game in 2017 the Jags slipped to 5-11 under Coach Doug Marrone. Allen’s presence can only help them rebound in 2019.

On the heels of the best season in 41 years Mark Stoops and the coaching staff will no doubt be using one this draft as a major recruiting tool. In addition to having the number seven pick the Cats could have as many as eight players picked in the draft. The fact Allen was a two star recruit coming out of school only enhances the staff’s ability to develop players.
