Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian announced their engagement after the pair of one time friends had been dating for for over a year. The former women’s #1 and current WTA #2 hasn’t announced a wedding date yet, but will be getting married for the first time at the age of 35 to the 33 year old Ohanian.
Ohanian likely isn’t well know to sports fans, but if you use Reddit to keep up with sports or anything else online, you’re familiar with his work, as the New Yorker is the co-founder of Reddit. Ohanian has gone on to produce books, work on other internet related projects, and give public speeches and other media appearances. He’s also noted for his activism for internet freedom, fair use, and privacy rights.
Williams has previously been linked relationship wise with numerous other well-known celebrities, most notably Common. Ohanian has been seen in the stands cheering on his love at numerous tournaments, and the veteran American #1 seems to be in a happy, and healthy place in life right now, something that should reflect positively on her tennis.
Williams will be joining a lost of numerous modern tennis stars who have recently tied the knot. The top two men’s players Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are now married of course. The just retired Ana Ivanovic got married this year, as did Dominika Cibulkova, Taylor Fritz, and Flavia Pennetta. Roger Federer is yet another example of a player who found tennis success and marital harmony to go hand in hand, so Serena fans should feel good about the news. Ohanian is sure to be spotted at more tennis tournaments in the upcoming year, perhaps joining Serena as she lifts more trophies.
