Carlos Alcaraz will not only be entering the Australian Open as the world No. 1 seed, but will also be eyeing what would be a historic Career Grand Slam with a tournament run in Melbourne — an achievement that would make him just the ninth man in tennis history to do so, and comfortably the youngest in the Open Era.
Alcaraz and Sinner Both Chasing History
This is a Major that has historically been Alcaraz’s weakest Slam. He has never gone beyond the quarterfinals here, a stage he reached in each of the last two seasons. Despite that, the world #1 still enters the tournament as one of the top two favourites to lift the trophy, alongside his chief rival Jannik Sinner.
Sinner is a two-time defending champion at the Australian Open and will be aiming to become only the second men’s player in history to complete a three-peat in Melbourne. Interestingly, Sinner himself will also be chasing a Career Grand Slam later this season at the French Open — a title he came agonisingly close to winning in 2025, where he failed to convert three championship points in the final.
Alcaraz Agrees to Hypothetical Slam Trade
Ahead of the 2026 season, Alcaraz was asked about a proposed hypothetical trade between himself and Sinner — one that would see both players complete the Career Grand Slam. Speaking before the first Major of the season, the Spaniard agreed that:
“I’d trade the Australian Open for Roland Garros with Jannik. Honestly, I’d make that trade.”
While Alcaraz was admittedly laughing when he made the comment, both players chasing their respective Career Grand Slams will undoubtedly be one of the biggest storylines of the first two majors of the year.
What makes the narrative even more compelling is how similar their off-seasons have been. Neither played a warm-up tournament before the Australian Open, both participated in an exhibition event in South Korea to begin the year, and both now sit on a potential collision course for a final in Melbourne, where each would be playing for a very different kind of history.
