“A Lightbulb Moment”: Coach Ferrero Explains How Carlos Alcaraz Saved His 2025 Season

Despite much of the discourse surrounding the 2025 ATP season centering on the “SinCaraz” rivalry, it was ultimately Carlos Alcaraz who finished the year as the world No. 1, capturing a career-high eight titles and holding more silverware than any other player on tour.

Not only was this the Spaniard’s second year-end No. 1 finish, after first doing so in 2022, but it also marked his fourth consecutive season winning a Major title. Yet things did not appear promising early in the year. Alcaraz crashed out of the Australian Open before the final four and delivered a below-par Sunshine Double.

The Coach’s Revelation: A “Lightbulb Moment”

Now, with the season concluded, Alcaraz’s long-time head coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, has highlighted the exact point where everything shifted, a moment he described as a “lightbulb moment.”

“Winning in Monte Carlo, without playing that well, but having a 10-out-of-10 attitude really helped [Carlos] have clarity about the rest of the season. From there he reached a lot of finals, had incredible results in the Grand Slams… But Monte Carlo was a lightbulb moment. It gave him the confidence he needed and from there he was able to get some amazing results.”

In hindsight, given how successfully Alcaraz’s season unfolded, it is not unreasonable to view his Monte Carlo campaign, especially his three-set thriller against Arthur Fils, as the true turning point. From that tournament until Tokyo, Alcaraz reached nine consecutive finals, winning seven of them.

The Spark That Changed Everything

That stretch formed the core of his remarkable 2025 season, helping him not only finish the year as the best player in the world but also put up statistics as strong as anyone this decade. He claimed two Major titles and added further Masters 1000 trophies to his growing collection.

While his historic five-set classic against Jannik Sinner at the French Open will understandably dominate future conversations, when analyzing Alcaraz’s 2025 season and searching for the inflection point, it will always be the Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo, something even his coach has validated.

About Zain Mustafa

Being brought up in a sports-watching home, some of the spheres flying across the TV screen stuck with me more than others, the yellow fuzzy one probably the most. A lefty Mallorcan got me into it, a righty Murcian has kept me in it after him, but to be honest, once I was in, I never felt like leaving anyway.
