The 2025 Davis Cup finals are taking place in Bologna, Italy on indoor hard courts this week. Team nominations are not made until just before the matches begin, but each team’s roster is set, and the tournament began on Tuesday with quarterfinal action between Belgium and France. Here’s a quick look on what to expect this week.
Belgium Secures Semifinal Berth
Despite the depth and talent of French men’s tennis overall, it was their plucky neighbors Belgium, lead by a rising Raphael Collignon and Zizou Bergs who are into the semifinals. Collignon upset Corentin Moutet in three sets 2-6 7-5 7-5 in a momentous effort at the end of a tiring season.
Bergs backed that up with a straight set win over the in-form Arthur Rinderknech, meaning that doubles did not need to be played.
Italy vs Austria
Home nation Italy still believe they can win the Davis Cup without the elite talents of Jannik Sinner or Lorenzo Musetti. The roster includes former top 15 player Matteo Berrettini, a top 20 doubles pair of Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli, plus top 40 players Flavio Cobolli and Lorenzo Sonego.
Italy will be favored against their neighbors to the north, Austria. The Austrian side has a top doubles pair in Lucas Miedler and Alexander Erler, but a singles lineup of Filip Misolic, Jurij Rodionov, and Lukas Neumayer lacks an elite talent. Austria pulling off a win would be historic.
Spain vs Czechia
Two tennis loving nations, Jiri Lehecka leads the Czech’s against Spain. Teenage talent Jakub Mensik is here after a top 20 rankings finish, and Tomas Machac is the third option for singles. It’s a strong Czech team.
The Spanish team would be better on clay, top 10 doubles player Marcel Granollers is on the squad captained by David Ferrer. Ferrer’s grit will need to transfer over to the singles options of Jaume Munar, Pablo Carreno Busta and Pedro Martinez Portero. A Spanish upset might be in the cards, but I wouldn’t count on it.
Argentina vs Germany
The final quarterfinal tie taking place on November 20th pits Germany, with the top ranked player participating in Davis Cup, world #3 Alexander Zverev, against Argentina. Zverev, Jan-Lennard Struff and Yannick Hanfmann are the singles options. Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz are here for doubles, a top 15 pair.
Argentina has doubles #3 Horacio Zeballos with Andres Molteni, but the singles lineup prefers clay. Francisco Cerundolo the world #21 is the tip of the spear, Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Francisco Comesana are reliable but less elite options for singles.
Expected Semifinals
Italy vs Belgium, and Germany vs Czechia would be the semifinal matchups if everything holds true to form. While Belgium’s win over France was an upset, Collignon and Bergs are playing well and enjoy this surface and venue. Belgium has every chance to make a final against an Italy without Sinner. Zverev is well positioned to steer Germany into the final, but the Czechia team is extremely balanced and talented. This could be Mensik’s shining moment.
