Iga Swiatek’s chances of winning a second Grand Slam this season were extinguished after falling 4-6 3-6 to Amanda Anisimova in the US Open quarterfinal. The Pole defeated the same opponent 6-0 6-0 in the Wimbledon final less than two months ago. In her press conference after losing to Anisimova, Swiatek was caught off guard by a question about tiredness and needing a mental break.
Iga Swiatek Annoyed by “Mental Break” Question After US Open Loss
Journalist David Law asked Swiatek whether she was feeling tired after playing a lot of matches in recent months. Swiatek, surprised by Law choosing that question straight after her defeat to Anisimova, hesitated before saying her wins in the opening four rounds were not lengthy.
“Well… I don’t know. Like… It’s not like my matches were exhausting here.”
Law followed up by wondering if the six-time Grand Slam champion needed a mental break. Swiatek immediately took exception to his question and the wording, leading to a back-and-forth between the pair, with the world No. 3 visibly annoyed throughout.
Law: “Do you feel like you need a mental break? I’m not talking about the losses as such….
Swiatek: “Why would you say that?”
Law: “Well… It’s just a lot in the row….
Swiatek: “Talk to the people responsible for the schedule. Do you need a mental break?”
Law: “Sorry?”
Swiatek: “You look like you need a mental break.”
Law: “I do, yeah.”
Swiatek: ” Then what are you doing here?”
The journalist did not seem to have bad intentions. Law probably thought Swiatek would not mind the question since she has complained about the packed calendar in the past. However, Swiatek not wanting to be asked about that immediately after a tough US Open loss is also understandable. She probably expected all the questions to be about the match and her tournament rather than broader concerns about fatigue or needing a mental break.
