The Bitpanda Hamburg Open, played at the Am Rothenbaum tennis center, is one of the two tournaments played a week before the 2025 French Open. This year’s competition is filled with excellent talent, including hometown star and last year’s finalist Alexander Zverev. 2 first-round matches are scheduled on Day 1 alongside some intriguing qualifying matches. LWOT will predict the main draw matches and two of the best qualifying encounters in this article.
ATP Hamburg Day 1 Predictions
Elias Ymer vs Marko Topo (Qualifying Second Round)
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Elias Ymer got a great win in the first round of the qualifying against Christopher O’Connell. Ymer attacked the Australian’s second serve, letting him win just 32% behind it. The Swedish player has not played any main draw matches this year on the ATP tour, and this is a great chance for him to qualify. Marko Topo, the German wild card, upset Emilio Nava in the first round with a hard-fought three-set win. Topo has qualified for the main draw before, so he knows how to handle the situation. However, he must play his best tennis to have a chance.
Prediction: Ymer in 3
Aleksandar Kovacevic vs Vitaliy Sachko (Qualifying Second Round)
Head-to-Head: Kovacevic 1-0 Sachko
Aleksandar Kovacevic defeated Max Wiskandt in the first round of qualifying to end his five-match losing streak in all competitions. This was a much-needed win for the American player, who has lost his way since starting the season brilliantly. Vitaliy Sachko lost in the first round of qualifying here last year but has made amends this time with a fantastic performance against Denis Yevseyev. These two last met in the qualifying round of the 2024 Australian Open, where Kovacevic won in two tight sets. I expect Kovacevic to use his experience and come through.
Prediction: Kovacevic in 3
Luciano Darderi vs Diego Dedura
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Luciano Darderi’s stint on home soil did not go as anticipated, as he was eliminated in the second round in Rome and then lost his opening match at the Turin Challenger. Darderi has lost four of his last five matches in all competitions and looks far off the level which helped him win the title in Marrakech last month. This is a great opportunity for him to get some matches under his belt and arrive in Paris with some momentum. Darderi should win despite facing a tough task in Diego Dedura, a 17-year-old German wild card, who will be cheered on at every point.
Prediction: Darderi in 2
Francisco Cerundolo vs Pedro Martinez
Head-to-Head: Cerundolo 2-1 Martinez
This is the rematch of last year’s quarterfinal at the Hamburg Open, where Martinez got the better of Cerundolo. The Argentinian player has already taken revenge this year in Buenos Aires and will look to defeat the Spaniard once more. Cerundolo has been in great form and is one of the favourites to win the title this week. Martinez plays his best tennis on clay and will hope for a repeat of last year’s performance. However, he has struggled recently and will find it difficult to produce his best tennis.
Prediction: Cerundolo in 3
