WTA Charleston Day 1 Predictions
Caty McNally vs Anhelina Kalinina
Head-to-head: Kalinina 1-0 McNally
Caty McNally has been trying to find a solid level since returning from elbow surgery in November last year. Although her attempts at doing that have largely proved elusive thus far, Coco Gauff’s former doubles partner might take some hope from Kalinina’s form. The Ukrainian has only managed three wins since reaching the semifinal of the Brisbane International in the season’s opening week. However, McNally’s struggles and Kalinina posting strong past performances on clay still make her the favorite.
Prediction: Kalinina in 2
Veronika Kudermetova vs Marina Mateas
Head-to-head: First meeting
Mateas is in the draw as a wild card and sits outside the Top 200 in the rankings, never getting near the Top 100 throughout her career. Kudermetova has been trying to rebuild after tumbling down the rankings in 2024. While her attempts at doing that have been mixed, it would be a major surprise if she lost this matchup. The former French Open quarterfinalist is a better player than Mateas, and the gap between them should be widest on clay.
Prediction: Kudermetova in 2
Caroline Dolehide vs Elisabetta Cocciaretto
Head-to-head: First meeting
Cocciaretto will probably be happy to reach the clay court swing after largely struggling throughout the season so far. She has been to the fourth round of the French Open, and her sole WTA title was on the dirt in Lausanne in 2023. This may be a tough match for the Italian because Charleston’s faster green clay improves Dolehide’s chances. The American prefers quicker courts and her huge forehand can do significant damage if it fires. This could go either way, but Dolehide is narrowly favored to triumph.
Prediction: Dolehide in 3
