The first men’s semifinal of the 2025 Australian Open promises to be a thrilling encounter as two of the best players in the world compete for a spot in the final. A victory for Djokovic would put him on track for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title, further solidifying his legacy. In contrast, a win for Zverev would put him in a position to get another shot at his maiden Grand Slam title.
Australian Open Men’s Semifinal Preview: Novak Djokovic vs Alexander Zverev
Novak Djokovic
10-time champion Novak Djokovic had a tough draw to the semifinals and passed every test with flying colors. He showcased incredible mental fortitude and tactical knowledge to overcome Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. Despite sustaining a groin or hamstring injury during the match, which needed off-court medical treatment, Djokovic managed to elevate his game and played one of his best matches in recent times. Djokovic will play in his 50th Grand Slam semifinal.
Keys to Success
Djokovic has an 8-4 win-loss record against Zverev and has won all three Grand Slam encounters. This puts him at a mental advantage over the big German and Djokovic should look to exploit that. Djokovic’s return of serve was great against Alcaraz and will need to be dialled in again against a much bigger serve from Zverev. The German player tends to get tight in crucial situations and Djokovic will need to make Zverev play as many points as possible in tense situations to test his nerves.
Djokovic’s most consistent shot at this year’s Australian Open has been his serve, and it will be critical for him to have another excellent serving day and get as many cheap points as possible. His fitness is a concern and if he is not 100% physically, he will need to shorten points and play more aggressively as he did against Alcaraz in the quarterfinal.
Although Zverev has overcome his second serve demons of the past, Djokovic must strive to be more aggressive on the second serve return, as this may cause Zverev to go big on the second serve and hit some double faults in the process. Tommy Paul troubled Zverev with aggressive and deep returns and Djokovic is capable enough to do that. Djokovic can also exploit Zverev’s usually deep position in rallies and counter it with some drop shots. The 24-time Grand Slam champion has the advantage in forehand-to-forehand rallies and should look to stretch Zverev on that wing.
Alexander Zverev
Alexander Zverev will play in his third Australian Open semifinal and has been solid in most matches. However, he was far from his best against Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals and was lucky to win in four sets. The positives for Zverev will be how well he played the tiebreaks and endured hot conditions. Zverev has been remarkably consistent in reaching the later stages of Slams since his return from injury and that experience should help him against Djokovic.
Keys to Success
The most important thing for Zverev will be his mindset and mental strength. He has the game to beat anyone on his day but falls short in these big matches due to getting tight in important moments. He can’t afford that against Djokovic, who is a master of exploiting weakness. Zverevhas improved his mental aspect in the past couple of years and this would be a perfect time to showcase that.
If Djokovic’s movement is compromised in any way, Zverev must capitalize by being solid off the ground and forcing Djokovic to play longer rallies. But at the same time, he has to be aggressive and not let Djokovic dictate the rallies every time. Djokovic looked the most hindered when he had to move towards his forehand wing, thus Zverev’s backhand down the line would be crucial.
The serve and return dynamic will also play a key role for the German player. Zverev serves at a great pace and makes it at a high percentage but his accuracy is not the finest. Zverev should aim to be more accurate behind his serve even if it means having a lower first-serve percentage. On return, Zverev should take more risk on second-serve returns and not let Djokovic win more than 50% of second-serve points. Zverev will need to be extra ready to fend off Djokovic’s deep and fast returns and not get caught like he did against Tommy Paul.
The weather forecast for the rest of the tournament is cooler so heat won’t play a factor in this match no matter what time they play. Whatever the result, fans are in for a great match of tennis.
