Bizarre Scenes in Jeddah as Jakub Mensik Asked to Take Doping Test Mid-Match

Jakub Mensik found himself at the center of an unusual controversy during his match against Arthur Fils at the NextGen ATP Finals in Jeddah. The 19-year-old Czech, in desperate need of a win to keep his tournament hopes alive, was left visibly frustrated after being approached for an anti-doping test during a toilet break.

Trailing by a set, Mensik requested a bathroom break to regroup. However, upon his return, he expressed confusion and anger to chair umpire Nacho Forcadell about being confronted by anti-doping officials mid-break. The incident delayed the match, with Forcadell heard on his radio saying: “Someone from anti-doping in the middle of the toilet break wanted to test him now, and that delayed everything. So if you could talk to them–that should not happen.”

Mensik’s frustration was palpable as he flailed his arms and threw his towel in anger. Despite his efforts to regain focus, the interruption appeared to affect his momentum. Fils went on to secure a 4-2 4-3 4-2 victory, leaving Mensik on the brink of elimination.

Currently ranked 48th in the world, Mensik faces a must-win situation against Joao Fonseca in his final group match on Friday. Speaking before the tournament, the young Czech had high ambitions, aiming for the title. An early exit would mark a disappointing end to what many expected to be a breakout moment for the talented teenager.

The incident has raised questions about the timing and procedures of anti-doping tests during matches, with critics suggesting such interruptions could unfairly disrupt players’ rhythm and focus.
