According to the bookies, Vukic is the slight favorite in this matchup. Both players were struggling with their form, but picked it up last week in China. Maximilian Marterer has lost four of his last five matches. Last week in Shanghai, Marterer failed to qualify for the main-draw tournament, losing against Gerasimov in the first qualifying round. Here in Almaty, Marterer won his opening match against Dzumhur in straight sets. It was a low-quality match, with both players making way too many unforced errors. Last year around this time, Marterer played in Antwerp, where he reached the semifinals, losing against Bublik in straight sets.
Alejandro Tabilo has lost four of his last five matches. Last week in Shanghai, Tabilo reached the second round, where he was stopped by Paul in three tight sets. Tabilo played solid tennis, but could not convert four match points in the second set. Before the Masters in Shanghai, Tabilo was on an 8-match losing streak. Last year around this time, Alejandro was injured. He skipped the indoor season in Europe. He is looking for a solid result this week, to get back into the top 20 in the rankings, where he belongs.
Best Bet to Make
According to the bookies, Tabilo is the slight favorite in this matchup. Both players are out of form. However, Tabilo played solidly last week in Shanghai, and almost even won against Tommy Paul. On the other hand, Marterer won his opening match here in Almaty, but played poorly throughout the whole match. We believe that Tabilo is a better player than Marterer under these conditions, and that he will dominate from the very start.
That being said, Tabilo winning is a value bet.
