Six Players Withdraw From ATP Hangzhou Open

Andrey Rublev ahead of ATP Halle

The ATP Hangzhou Open begins on Wednesday. It is the first iteration of the tournament, which takes place during the first week of the ATP Tour’s Asian swing. Holger Rune and former US Open champion Marin Cilic are two players on the entry list. However, six players elected to withdraw from the Hangzhou Open. This article names those who have withdrawn and lists their replacements in the draw.

Which Players Have Withdrawn?

Andrey Rublev was one high-profile player to withdraw from the Hangzhou Open. Then ten-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist has not competed since a brutal five-set defeat in the US Open fourth-round against Grigor Dimitrov. Rublev did not state why he chose not to play. He likely wants to rest for the following tournaments in Beijing and Shanghai.

Matteo Berrettini was another significant name to withdraw from the Hangzhou Open. The Italian has to manage his schedule carefully after suffering several injuries in the past. That could make an early start to the Asian swing dangerous. The 2021 Wimbledon runner-up has performed pretty well since returning to tennis in March from his last injury and does not want to jeopardize that progress.

Sebastian Korda also withdrew from the event. The American’s last match was a heavy defeat in the US Open second round to Tomas Machac. His best achievement during the ATP’s Asian swing was reaching the final of last year’s Astana Open, finishing as runner-up to Adrian Mannarino. He has also decided to skip the opening week of the 2024 Asian swing.

Alex Michelsen, Dusan Lajovic, and Dominik Koepfer also withdrew.

Who Replaces Those Six Players in the Draw?

Zachary Svajda benefits from Rublev’s decision to withdraw from the Hangzhou Open. The American’s sole Grand Slam main draw victory was at the 2021 US Open. Svajda has mostly scrapped on the ATP Challenger Tour since that moment, but he could climb the rankings with a good run in China.

Mattia Bellucci replaces Berrettini at the Hangzhou Open. Berrettini was initially meant to be replaced by Aleksandar Vukic and then by Yannick Hanfmann, but those two also withdrew from the tournament. That gives Bellucci, a very talented player, an opportunity.

Maximilian Marterer enters the draw after Korda’s withdrawal. The place had been set to go to Adam Walton, but the Australian chose not to take it. Marterer’s best achievement was reaching the fourth round of the French Open in 2018. He will hope to recapture some of that form in Hangzhou.

The other players to enter the draw were Damir Dzumhur, Luca Nardi, and Mikhail Kukushkin.
