Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova was knocked out of the US Open in the second round on Wednesday, she fell at the hands of Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-4 7-5.
The No. 8 seeded Krejcikova won her second Grand Slam singles title this summer, but then she didn’t play any matches after the Paris Olympics. She was upfront last week about not knowing where her level of play was in the lead up to the US Open.
Her opponent on the day was just too good and the level from the Wimbledon champion was no match for her. Krejcikova hadn’t played a tournament on hard courts since February and it would have taken a bit of luck for her to play herself into a form great enough to repeat the history of winning both Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year, a feat no other woman has repeated since Serena Williams’s haul in 2012.
“I think I was playing quite well, definitely better than in the first match. I think my game was improving, but it just wasn’t enough.” She said in her post-match on-court interview.
Ruse, to her credit, has been on the courts in New York and put in more work after having to play her way into the main draw through the qualifying rounds and was better than Krejcikova on the points that proved decisive, fighting back from a 5-3 deficit in the second set to win the final four games.
