ATP Montreal Day 2 Predictions Including Denis Shapovalov vs Brandon Nakashima

Denis Shapovalov in action ahead of the ATP Belgrade Masters.

There is a packed ATP Montreal schedule for Day 2. This includes Denis Shapovalov’s first match since being defaulted from his Citi DC Open quarterfinal. The Candian’s contest with Brandon Nakashima is one of four predicted in this article. We at LWOT predict all the other matches on the slate in separate articles, including Ben Shelton vs Alexander Bublik, Taylor Fritz vs Mariano Navone, and Thanasi Kokkinakis vs Gael Monfils.

ATP Montreal Day 2 Predictions

Tommy Paul vs Luciano Darderi

Head-to-head: Paul 1-0 Darderi

These two met last week at the Olympics, with Paul winning in straight sets. That is an ominous sign for Darderi, who plays his best tennis on the dirt. Paul has improved on clay but is still most comfortable playing on North American hard courts. Darderi will hope to hit himself out of trouble. Unfortunately, doing that against the American in conditions that suit him is a tough ask.
Prediction: Paul in 2

Alexei Popyrin vs Tomas Machac

Head-to-head: Machac 1-0 Popyrin

Popyrin is never easy to face because of his powerful serve. However, I like Machac’s chances against him. The Czech is an excellent returner who can capitalize on any opportunities Popyrin gives him. Machac is also adept at making his opponents move during the rallies, which is a weaker part of the Australian’s game. This year’s Geneva Open runner-up to win in two sets.
Prediction: Machac in 2

Ugo Humbert vs Arthur Fils

Head-to-head: Humbert 2-0 Fils

Fils has struggled in his previous two meetings against his older compatriot. The 20-year-old likes to dominate the rallies, but that is difficult to do against Humbert’s powerful serving and hitting. Fils’ talent means he is not to be ruled out here. Overall, though, Humbert’s game is a tough matchup for him at this stage of his career, and a third consecutive defeat is the most likely outcome.
Prediction: Humbert in 2

Denis Shapovalov vs Brandon Nakashima

Head-to-head: Shapovalov 1-1 Nakashima

Shapovalov always receives excellent support from his home fans. However, Center Court in Montreal is likely to be even more vociferous than usual after his controversial default in his last match. That divisive decision has made many forget how well Shapovalov played in that tournament to reach the quarterfinal and push Ben Shelton in two close sets. Nakashima will find it challenging to overcome him on his home court. The American is still nowhere near his 2022 level at the moment.
Prediction: Shapovalov in 2
