Jannik Sinner (Italy) is currently enjoying the season of his life. He won the Australian Open at the start of the year and was also the Miami Open champion. Therefore, fans at Roland-Garros were undoubtedly excited to see him competing at the Paris Olympics, alongside players like Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. Unfortunately, the Italian has announced the sad news that he will not be competing in Paris.
Jannik Sinner Withdraws From Paris Olympics
Sinner said on social media that he had been training for a week on clay ahead of the event. He had been feeling good and was looking forward to playing at the Paris Olympics. He reached the semifinal of the French Open this year at Roland-Garros, only losing to the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in five sets. That shows his improvement on the dirt and he could have been a serious contender at the tournament.
Sadly, Sinner confirmed that he began to suffer with tonsilitis, discovering this after going to the doctor after feeling unwell. As a result, he does not feel he can commit to competing at the event. It is a very sad moment, as Sinner is such a breath of fresh air who brings to so much to the sport.
It will undoubtedly still be a great tournament in Paris, with many outstanding players still in the field. The draw has certainly become slightly easier for those players due to Sinner’s withdrawal. Hopefully, the Italian can make a swift recovery and be back quickly during the North American hard court season.
