There are two more ATP grass-court tournaments to be completed in Eastbourne and Mallorca before Wimbledon begins. The Mallorca Championships began on Sunday after three Round of 32 matches were completed. There are many exciting players on the entry list for the event in Mallorca, including Ben Shelton and Gael Monfils. However, five players have decided to withdraw from the Mallorca Championships, with two of these coming after the tournament had started on Sunday. This article lists those who have withdrawn and then names their four replacements in the draw. Five Players Withdraw From Mallorca Championships
Which Players Have Withdrawn?
Tallon Griekspoor was the first player to withdraw from the Mallorca Championships. The Dutchman started his grass-court season with a run to the semifinal on home soil in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, before losing to the world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the opening round in Halle. No official reason has been given for Griekspoor’s decision, making it likely that he is resting before Wimbledon.
Tomas Machac was the second player to withdraw from the Mallorca Championships. His only match so far on grass in 2024 was in Halle against Arthur Fils, which he lost in straight sets. The Czech has also not officially given his reasons for not playing in Spain.
Jordan Thompson also withdrew from the tournament. Last year’s runner-up in ‘S-Hertogenbosch had an impressive run to the semifinal at the Queen’s Club Championships. After those efforts, Thompson feels having a break before Wimbledon starts is necessary.
Corentin Moutet was the fourth player to withdraw from the Mallorca Championships. The Frenchman’s reasons for not playing at the tournament have also not been confirmed. Moutet had posted on social media a few days ago about playing in Mallorca. However, he spoke in a more recent post about building his fitness for Wimbledon, with no other explanations offered.
Marton Fucsovics was the final player to withdraw from the Mallorca Championships. The Hungarian has not played in any Wimbledon warmup events. He seems to have decided to play at SW19 having taken a long break after the French Open and with no matches on grass under his belt.
Who Replaces Those Five Players In The Draw?
Jakub Mensik takes Griekspoor’s place at the Mallorca Championships. The spot was initially set to go to Arthur Rinderknech, but the Frenchman also decided not to play at the event. Mensik is one of the most talented players in men’s tennis and is a dangerous draw for anyone.
Yannick Hanfmann benefits from Machac’s decision to withdraw from the tournament. Similarly to Mensik, the spot was set to go to Dominik Koepfer, but he elected not to compete in Mallorca. Hanfmann possesses a poweful game and will hope to implement that in front of the Spanish fans.
Gijs Brouwer replaces Thompson at the Mallorca Championships. The Dutchman had a good run in ‘S-Hertogenbosch, where he reached the quarterfinal as a qualifier. His game suits grass very well, and he will be hopeful of further success at another ATP 250 event.
Roberto Bautista Agut began his tournament in Mallorca on Sunday after profiting from Moutet’s withdrawal. The veteran Spaniard took full advantage with an outstanding performance to hammer Taro Daniel 6-0 6-1 in the opening round.
Finally, Luca Nardi is also set to compete at the event after taking Fucsovics’ place. The Italian’s sole win on grass so far this year was against David Goffin in ‘S-Hertogenbosch. He will hope his devastating forehand can do some serious damage in Mallorca.
