Novak Djokovic Withdraws From French Open with Knee Injury

Novak Djokovic in action at the French Open.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic wowed crowds in Paris this year by winning two matches at this year’s French Open. He survived a thriller against Lorenzo Musetti, before triumphing in a second five-set battle against Francisco Cerundolo. His next match was scheduled to a repeat of last year’s final against Casper Ruud. However, news has now broken that the 24-time Grand Slam champion will play no further part at the 2024 French Open.

Novak Djokovic Withdraws From French Open

Djokovic first began having issues with his knee during his match against Lorenzo Musetti. He was hobbling during the second set of that battle with the Italian, but he somehow found a way to come through it with his unique level fighting spirit. Some were concerned about whether he would be able to play in his following match but he elected to play against Cerundolo.

Similar problems reared their head again against Cerundolo. Djokovic went off for a medical timeout during the match and took painkillers for the problem. Still, he managed to come back out after and finish the match, winning once again in five sets. After that match, Djokovic cast doubt on whether he would be able to play in the following round against Casper Ruud.

Unfortunately, his fears were justified. After an MRI scan, Djokovic has decided he cannot play anymore at this year’s French Open. He will now try and recover in time for Wimbledon. The Olympics follow that, which is a major goal for Djokovic this season. With this in mind, it is not a surprise that he has elected to be cautious and withdraw from the French Open. The tournament will undoubtedly miss such a great champion, but there are still many great matchups left in Paris.
