The quarterfinals of ATP Montpellier will be settled on Friday with the four top seeds in the tournament all still in contention for the title. Here is your look at the four matches.
Michael Mmoh vs Holger Rune
Following a career year in 2023, Holger Rune reached the final in Brisbane and is starting off his run in Montpellier on track, securing a straight sets win in the previous round. Mmoh reached a career high ranking last season, the American has two wins this week without dropping a set and has to be happy with how he’s playing. I don’t think Mmoh can translate his game to an even higher level now but Rune is facing an in-form opponent and can’t afford to take it easy in this matchup. Rune in 3
Borna Coric vs Flavio Cobolli
Coric and Cobolli split meetings, the Italian edged past Gael Monfils in round one and has a couple of wins this week as he builds upon a career high ranking, following a great run at the Australian Open to the third round as a qualifier. This next-gen talent has already surpassed his previous high win total on the ATP Tour and we are only in February. Coric comes off a challenger final and has struggled for consistency for his part, although Coric should win based off ranking, Cobolli’s game is coming together right now and this feels like the opportunity to strike for an upset. Harold Mayot vs Felix Auger-Aliassime
Auger-Aliassime was limited in 2023 but still managed to lift an ATP title towards the end of the year in Basel, the charismatic Canadian was pushed to three sets in his round 1 match at this tournament, ATP Next Gen player Mayot reached two ATP Challenger Tour semis recently and has won two matches against French players this week without dropping a set. At a career high ranking, Mayot plays with house money and will try to neuter Auger-Aliassime’s all around game. Mayot in 3
Alexander Shevchenko vs Alexander Bublik
Bublik was a semifinalist in Adelaide and is looking to return to that stage this week, last year was a disappointed in some ways despite winning two ATP singles titles, but he is looking to return to form in 2024. Next-gen talent Shevchenko has won two matches in Montpellier there were tight three setters, he was also a finalist in Metz last year, his first year on the ATP Tour in a significant way. Shevchenko reached his maiden ATP final in France and now he has an opportunity to matchup effectively with Bublik and continue his success in the country on indoor hard courts. Shevchenko in 3
