WTA Hong Kong Day 4 Predictions
Wang Xinyu vs Sara Sorribes Tormo
Head-to-head: Wang 1-0 Sorribes Tormo
These two played in the US Open second round six weeks ago. Wang Xinyu won an epic battle 5-7 7-3 6-4. The Chinese player has been in very solid form recently since then. A run to the fourth round at the US Open has been backed up with a semfinal at the Japan Women’s Open and a round of 16 appearance in Beijing.
By contrast, Sara Sorribes Tormo has only played two matches since Flushing Meadows, including her opening round victory in Hong Kong. The Spaniard showed her ability on hard courts with a run to the title before the US Open in Cleveland. However, the conditions at the WTA Hong Kong Open suit Wang’s game more, and she is playing so well recently. She is likely to have the edge over Sorribes Tormo again.
Prediction: Wang in 2

Elise Mertens vs Sofya Lansere
Head-to-head: first meeting
It has already been a great tournament for Sofya Lansere. The world #273 came through qualifying and then got a hugely valuable win against home favourite Hong Yi Cody Wong in the first round. Can she pull off a shock against Elise Mertens? The Belgian has not been at her best since the US Open, which offers encouragement. However, the former Australian semifinalist still represents a steep rise in class. Expect Lansere to make this WTA Hong Kong Open clash competitive for long periods, but for the quality of Mertens to prove decisive.
Prediction: Mertens in 2

Mirra Andreeva vs Leylah Fernandez
Head-to-head: Andreeva 1-0 Fernandez
Mirra Andreeva beat Leylah Fernandez in April of this year on the clay courts of Madrid. Hard courts suit both these players the most, but Fernandez is particularly vulnerable against someone with Andreeva’s style on clay. The Canadian has a better chance on the slightly faster and lower bouncing courts at the WTA Hong Kong Open. There is the potential for Fernandez to redirect the pace of Andreeva’s shots effectively, and cause problems. The 16-year-old has been in good form lately, and starts as favourite, but Fernandez may pull off an upset in suitable conditions in Hong Kong.
Prediction: Fernandez in 3
