With two intriguing matches on the schedule, there should be plenty of entertaining action on semifinal day at the ATP Washington Open. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for both matches, as well as the women’s semifinal action. But who will secure their spot in Sunday’s final in D.C.?
ATP Washington Semifinal Predictions
Taylor Fritz vs Tallon Griekspoor
Head-to-head: Fritz 1-0 Griekspoor
Taylor Fritz was unable to back up his run to the Wimbledon quarterfinals last year, falling in the second round at the All England Club, but he made an immediate return to form in Atlanta, winning the title and dropping just one set in the process, and he has impressed again in Washington, beating Zachary Svajda, Andy Murray and Jordan Thompson (both in the same day) to reach the semifinals where he will face Dutch 12th seed Tallon Griekspoor.
Griekspoor also lost early at Wimbledon, though he did reach the quarterfinals in the men’s doubles, but has looked more at home back on hard courts, scoring wins over Dan Evans, Gael Monfils (in a three-set thriller) and J.J. Wolf to make the last four. This looks like a tall order, however. Fritz dismissed him in straight sets in their only previous match in 2020 and although he has improved considerably in the intervening three years, Fritz has too and the American is in sparkling form.
Prediction: Fritz in 2

Grigor Dimitrov vs Dan Evans
Head-to-head: Dimitrov 3-2 Evans
It had turned into a miserable season for Dan Evans, but after snapping a tour-level losing streak that had stretched back to April in the first round by beating Gregoire Barrere, he has been playing with real freedom at the ATP Washington Open, picking up straight-sets wins over Alexander Shevchenko and second seed Frances Tiafoe to reach his third semifinal of the season. Waiting for him on the other side of the net will be the mercurial talent Grigor Dimitrov.
It’s been a typically up-and-down season for Dimitrov, but he has found a good rhythm so far this week, beating Mackenzie McDonald and Emil Ruusuvuori before Ugo Humbert’s withdrawal sent him into the semifinals. This has the makings of a close match, a reflection of their close head-to-head so far, but Dimitrov has the advantage of not having had to play back-to-back matches yesterday. That might just prove to be the difference here.
Prediction: Dimitrov in 3
