The WTA Tour has descended upon North America as Monterrey, Mexico, is set to host a 250-level event. This 32-woman draw is filled with some of the game’s best players and those looking to break through to the top of the tour. On Day 2, Camila Giorgi squares off against Elena-Gabriela Ruse. We at LWOT have the preview and prediction for that match and all other happenings around the grounds of Monterrey. But who will advance?
WTA Monterrey Day 2 Predictions
Elisabetta Cocciaretto vs Marina Bassols Ribera
Head-to-Head: Cocciaretto 1-0 Bassols Ribera
22-year-old Elisabetta Cocciaretto will take on 23-year-old Marina Bassols Ribera in Monterrey. These two met back in 2018 at the ITF level, and Cocciaretto is the player who has taken the next step since that meeting. The Italian achieved her highest ranking of world No. 48 last month after reaching her third tour-level final in Hobart. She is 6-4 this season and is the No. 8 seed in this event. Bassols Ribera is in the draw as a Lucky Loser after falling in the second round of qualifying. She is just 0-2 in tour-level main draw matches this season. Cocciaretto is the more confident and in-form player. She should have no trouble in this one.
Prediction: Cocciaretto in 2
Katerina Siniakova vs Kamilla Rakhimova
Head-to-Head: Siniakova 1-0 Rakhimova
No. 6 seed Katerina Siniakova will take on 21-year-old Kamilla Rakhimova in Monterrey. Siniakova won their only previous meeting 6-3 7-6 earlier this year in Adelaide. The 26-year-old Czech native is coming off a run to the Merida semifinals and is feeling very confident in her game. That said, Rakhimova is coming off a W60 title in Irapuato. She also advanced through two qualifying rounds in Monterrey, totaling seven consecutive wins. Rakhimova has the tools to push Siniakova, but I trust Siniakova when it matters most.
Prediction: Siniakova in 3
Sachia Vickery vs Xinyu Wang
Head-to-Head: Vickery 1-0 Wang
27-year-old American Sachia Vickery will take on 21-year-old Xinyu Wang in the first round in Monterrey. Vickery won their only previous meeting, 7-5 7-6, back in 2021. Despite that result, Wang has turned into the much better player. She holds her career highest ranking of world No. 65 and holds a 6-3 record over the last month. Vickery looked solid in her two qualifying victories over the weekend, but I do not believe she has the tools to hang with Wang. The 21-year-old will be too consistent.
Prediction: Wang in 2
Camila Giorgi vs Elena-Gabriela Ruse
Head-to-Head: Giorgi 0-1 Ruse
Camila Giorgi is looking to stay in excellent form in Monterrey. The 31-year-old Italian is coming off a title in Merida, her first since August 2021. She will take on Elena-Gabriela Ruse in Monterrey’s first round. Ruse, whose ranking is outside the top 150, had to work through two qualifying matches to reach the main draw in Monterrey. She is just 1-3 in tour-level main draw matches this season. Fatigue could play a factor for Giorgi after winning five matches last week. That said, I do not think it will affect her this early into the tournament. Her power will be too much for Ruse to handle.
Prediction: Giorgi in 2
