Bianca Andreescu broke onto the scene as a teenager in 2019 by winning the US Open, becoming the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title.
That was not the only big title she won that year, picking up Premier Mandatory (now called WTA 1000) crowns at Indian Wells and the Rogers Cup.
However, the now 22-year-old has struggled to recreate this form since, suffering with injuries and various off-court issues, and is looking to win her first title since her triumph in New York as the top seed at a WTA 250 in Hua Hin, Thailand.
Andreescu returned to action in the clay season of 2022 ranked outside the Top 100, and has made some positive steps despite not getting close to the heights of her season four years ago.
In 2022, Andreescu’s best result came on the grass in Bad Homburg where she made the final, losing to now-Top 10 Caroline Garcia. The Canadian also made a WTA 1000 quarter-final on the clay, in Rome.
However, she has not managed to translate these improved results to the major tournaments, having not made it past the second round of the Australian Open, Roland Garros, or Wimbledon in her career.

The No.42 has played four matches so far this season, getting some mixed results in both Adelaide and Melbourne. Her highlight of the Australian swing was coming back from 0-6 2-5 down, against two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza.
At the first Major of the year Andreescu got off to a good start, picking up a straight sets win over the seeded Marie Bouzkova. However, she fared less well against the No.100 Cristina Bucsa, failing to convert a match point in the second set, then going on to lose the match.

Andreescu took a wild card for the tournament in Thailand, and is the top seed going into the event that is being held for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Canadian plays British No.2 Harriet Dart in the first round. It’s the third meeting between the pair, with Andreescu winning both previous encounters. However, Dart had her best year in 2022, reaching the fourth round of Indian Wells and breaking into the Top 100 for the first time.

If Andreescu does win the title in southeast Asia she will move back into the Top 30 for the first time since November 2021.
