Veteran players John Isner and Marin Cilic look to secure third round berths in the US Open on day 4 of the tournament. We have predictions for every second match in New York including Jannik Sinner’s match from our panelists.
John Isner vs Holger Rune
Shane Black: The courts in Queens are playing fast, perfect for 2x US Open quarterfinalist John Isner. The veteran American is not seeded at this event for the first time since 2009, but he still presents a major threat to every player he goes up against. This will be 19-year-old Holger Rune’s first match against the big-serving American, which typically does not bode well for youngsters. I believe Isner is extra motivated to make some noise at this year’s US Open and sneaks by the Dane in four tight sets. Isner in 4
Marin Cilic vs Albert Ramos Vinolas
Shane: Meeting for the 11th time, Cilic holds the 7-3 head-to-head advantage over Ramos-Vinolas. Both guys won their Round 1 match in straight sets and should be fresh for this one. I trust the #15 seed a bit more as he provides more power from the baseline than the Spaniard. Cilic in 4
Grigor Dimitrov vs Brandon Nakashima
Shane: #17 seed Grigor Dimitrov and Brandon Nakashima match up in Round 2 with nearly the same 2022 record. The Bulgarian bested the American 6-3 6-4 back in May on the clay courts of Rome. This one should be a battle, but I do like the two-handed backhand of Nakashima to dictate important points and lead him to the upset. Nakashima in 5
Gijs Brouwer vs Lorenzo Musetti
Shane: Lorenzo Musetti had one of the wins of Round 1, coming back from 2-5 down in the fifth to defeat David Goffin 3-6 7-5 6-4 3-6 7-6. Seeded #26, the young Italian holds his first seed at a Grand Slam in his career. Gijs Brouwer worked through three rounds of qualifying and is playing some solid tennis. Unless Musetti has a meltdown, he should advance into Round 3. Musetti in 3
