US Open Day 2 Women’s Predictions
Aliaksandra Sasnovich vs Elisabetta Cocciaretto
Tracey:
Sasnovich is coming off a strong run in Cleveland and should be able to use that momentum to get the better of the Italian qualifier. Sasnovich also has much more experience in main draw matches at majors, this is an opportunity for a rare win she should not pass up.
Prediction: Sasnovich in 2
Damian:
Elisabetta Cocciaretto rarely plays on hard courts and qualifying is already a nice bonus for her. Aliaksandra Sasnovich has just reached the final in Cleveland and should be fired up for a good run in New York as well.
Prediction: Sasnovich in 2
Fraser:
Sasnovich is in great form this year and should be able to make a decent run in New York if the draw is kind to her. The Belarussian is fresh off a finals appearance as well so she has form and confidence on her side heading into this one.
Prediction: Sasnovich in 2
Jaimee Fourlis vs Yue Yuan
Tracey:
Yue Yuan motored through qualifying without dropping a set and gets a winnable first round matchup in the main draw against the Aussie wild card Jaimee Fourlis. Yuan seems to be playing well enough to be considered the favorite in this matchup.
Prediction: Yuan in 2
Damian:
Jaimee Fourlis has has some awesome ITF results this year, but whenever she tried herself on the main tour, it wasn’t pretty. Yue Yuan blasted through the qualifying draw and got a lot of practice on these courts already.
Prediction: Yuan in 3
Fraser:
Fourlis is in for a touch match here. The Aussie has shown grit and fight in the past when given main draw opportunities and I expect her to do the same and take advantage of the one she has earned here.
Prediction: Fourlis in 3
Xinyu Wang vs Linda Fruhvirtova
Tracey:
Linda Fruhvirtova continues to impress. The 17-year-old successfully came through the qualifying draw and now has a winnable first round matchup against the out of form Xinyu Wang. I’ll give Wang the benefit of the doubt here–she is the more complete player at the moment and should be good enough to beat her very inexperienced opponent.
Prediction: Wang in 3
Damian:
Linda Fruhvirtova is one of the few qualifiers with winnable first-round matchups. Her brutal consistency should help her secure an advantage against Xinyu Wang, who’s been badly out of form recently.
Prediction: Fruhvirtova in 3
Fraser:
Wang is another great young player who could well make a big splash at this event. I expect the Chinese star to win a match or two at the very least and she could well be in the second week if she finds her best tennis along the way.
Prediction: Wang in 2
Petra Kvitova vs Erika Andreeva
Tracey:
Kivtova’s performance in Cincinnati should give her a huge confidence boost going into the US Open. Combine that with an opener against World No. 131 Erika Andreeva, and it should be an easy day at the office for Kvitova.
Prediction: Kivtova in 2
Damian:
Erika Andreeva has been rising steadily this year and this US Open qualifying success is another very natural step for her. Petra Kvitova should have too much for her (especially after that Cincinnati run), but it will be a good learning experience.
Prediction: Kivtova in 2
Fraser:
Kvitova found some hard court form with a finals run in Cincinnati. That bodes well for her here and she should be amongst the contenders once again at Flushing Meadows.
Prediction: Kvitova in 2
