Day 6 at Wimbledon will see the conclusion of the third round as players hope to advance to the second week. As always, we here at LWOT will share our thoughts on all eight matches with you. We split the day’s matches between this and a separate article. Predicting Saturday’s matches are Jakub Bobro, Andy Watson, and Fraser Learmonth. Who do you think will win?
Wimbledon Day 6 Women’s Predictions
Jessica Pegula vs Petra Martic
Jakub:
Pegula is already having her best Wimbledon result, earning wins over tricky opponents in Donna Vekic and Harriet Dart. Martic dominates the head-to-head 4-1 over the American and has reached the second week here twice before. It’s a close call but I will go with the experienced Croat here.
Prediction: Martic in 3
Andy:
Pegula had a tough test against Dart in the last round and came through to find her game very well. Martic is an experienced campaigner with a good game for grass so this is probably another step up, but one that Pegula can make.
Prediction: Pegula in 3
Fraser:
Martic continues her 2022 resurgence with a third round appearance in Wimbledon. The Croat faces a tough ask here in Pegula who has been one of the best players in the WTA this year. However, Martic has a great grass court game and I like her chances of an upset in this one.
Prediction: Martic in 3
Paula Badosa vs Petra Kvitova
Jakub:
Likely the match of the day for me. Badosa dropped just eight games in her first two matches against Louisa Chirico and Irina Bara. Kvitova is looking to reach the fourth round just for the second time since her last Wimbledon title in 2014. I expect a tight affair with the Spaniard emerging victorious.
Prediction: Badosa in 3
Andy:
One of the matches of the day. Badosa has had the chance to adapt to the grass after two straightforward matches, but this will be anything but easy. Kvitova played like a dream for most of her match against Bogdan until the winning post came into view. Ultimately this is probably why she won’t win the whole thing but I think the Czech has the game, form and focus to beat Badosa.
Prediction: Kvitova in 2
Fraser:
Kvitova continues her quest for a third Wimbledon title against Badosa in this match. The Spaniard hasn’t been able to replicate her form from last year and this certainly isn’t her favorite surface. Back the lefty to move on.
Prediction: Kvitova in 3
Harmony Tan vs Katie Boulter
Jakub:
Harmony Tan took out Serena Williams in a three-hour battle, was criticized by would-be doubles partner for withdrawing, and came back to beat Sara Sorribes Tormo. Boulter took out last year’s finalist Karolina Pliskova in an emotional victory dedicated to her grandmother, who recently passed away. They are certainly happy to see each other across the net considering at this point in the competition but I expect the Brit to win pretty easily here.
Prediction: Boulter in 2
Andy:
I may be made to eat my words but I think Tan has been fairly fortunate in the opponents she has faced. A depleted Williams, though getting through that took guts, and a far too slice happy Sara Sorribes Tormo. In Boulter the Frenchwoman is going to have to contend with a confident Brit, getting crowd support and familiar with the courts. Also Boulter is a very powerful player who can force Tan out of her comfort zone.
Prediction: Boulter in 2
Fraser:
Tan will not make this easy for Boulter, but this is a match that the Briton should be winning. She will have the crowd behind her and is probably the better grass-court player. Tan’s ability to keep her nerve so far has been impressive, particularly in beating Williams, but expect this to be a challenge too far for the Frenchwoman.
Prediction: Boulter in 3
Iga Swiatek vs Alize Cornet
Jakub:
Swiatek extended her win streak to 37 but Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove certainly made her earn that win, taking a set off the Pole. Cornet, through to her first Wimbledon third round since 2016, will certainly be encouraged by that match and might smell some blood in the water. The experienced Frenchwoman knows how to battle and could make it tough for Swiatek.
Prediction: Swiatek in 3
Andy:
The Pole has been less than impressive despite continuing the winning streak to 37. Cornet should be well up for this and has a history of causing upsets. I think she might be able to do it again here and dump out the massive favourite.
Prediction: Cornet in 3
Fraser:
Swiatek had a rare off performance in her last round and dropped a set. However, the Pole found a way to win ugly yet again and remains unbeaten across 7 tournaments. That streak should continue here against Cornet who is a quality player but not of the same level as the world #1.
Prediction: Swiatek in 2
