Iga Swiatek Wins Second French Open Title, Cements Hold on #1 Ranking

Iga Swiatek French Open Trophy 2022

Poland’s Iga Swiatek won her second French Open Title on Saturday, (2020, 2022), which is also her second Grand Slam overall. Swiatek had no trouble with American Coco Gauff, the teenager was playing in her first ever Grand Slam final and Swiatek made quick work of things, taking control of proceedings and never relenting in a 6-1 6-3 victory on Roland Garros center court in just over an hour.

Swiatek broke Gauff twice in the first three games of the match, the American played a long game at 0-2 down and saved three break points before eventually giving up the double break after a set of deuce points.

Gauff would hold just one of her service games in the first set, as Swiatek broke to take the set 6-1. The second set was more competitive, Gauff broke Swiatek to open set 2, but would go on to lose two more service games in the set, from 0-2 down, Swiatek reeled five straight games for a 5-2 lead, then served the match out with relative ease winning her only match point for a 6-1 6-3 victory.

The heavy favorite going into the match, Swiatek served well and took advantage of Gauff’s jitters on serve, Swiatek faced just one break point while creating ten against Gauff. Swiatek’s record in finals now moves to 9-1, and most of those titles have been straight set victories.

The match continues Swiatek’s red hot form since February, she hasn’t lost a match since the second month of the year and many of her wins haven’t even been close. Swiatek’s winning streak is now equal to Venus Williams 2000 run, as Swiatek is 42-3 on the season with six consecutive tournament titles. Swiatek’s form has been at her best on clay and she should be the world #1 for some time to come, while also being one of the favorites to win Wimbledon in just a few weeks.

Gauff had a fantastic run overall in Paris and will be looking to quickly bounce back and contend at Wimbledon, given her strong play on the clay that at times was a surprise, she’s certainly going to be a top contender for the next two slams on the calendar, Wimbledon and the US Open.
