Miomir Kecmanovic vs Daniil Medvedev
Shane Black: Miomir Kecmanovic is having a career year and has proven his clay-court prowess by holding a 15-7 record on the dirt this season. Daniil Medvedev, who lost his only clay-court match of the season before Roland Garros, has looked very impressive in his two straight-set wins in Paris. Medvedev seems to be getting more comfortable on the clay which gives him a slight advantage. Medvedev in 4
Damian Kust: Miomir Kecmanovic was everyone’s dark horse before the start of the event, but now that Daniil Medvedev was quite solid in the early rounds, did that change? The Russian felt very comfortable in the conditions at Paris last year and it looks like they’re allowing him to play a more or less hard-court game again. Kecmanovic might struggle to hit through his defense, even though form and surface-wise, he’s got the edge. Should be a cracker. Medvedev in 5
Andrey Rublev vs Cristian Garin
Shane: Cristian Garin is having a down season but picked up nice wins over Tommy Paul and Ilya Ivashka to reach Round 3 in Paris. However, I believe his run comes to an end here. Andrey Rublev certainly has not looked perfect this week, but his consistency should prevail. Rublev in 4
Damian: Andrey Rublev perhaps hasn’t been as clean as many would expect in the first two rounds, but it was enough regardless. This will be a tougher task though as Cristian Garin seems to have regained some of his form in Rome. Against an opponent with a point-yielding machine as the Russian’s forehand, it won’t be an easy matchup for the Chilean. He’s got the fitness and the clay-court pedigree to make this close though. Holger Rune vs Hugo Gaston
Shane: The next-gen has arrived as 19-year-old Holger Rune takes on 21-year-old Hugo Gaston for the first time. Both had incredible performances in the first two rounds with not much separating the two. I love Rune’s game, but I believe the home crowd and cramping history plagues him late into this match. Gaston in 5
Damian: Out of nowhere, Hugo Gaston found his magic in front of the French crowd again. The Frenchman is such a tricky player to face and he might be the first one in Paris this week to test Holger Rune’s fitness with all the drop shots. The Dane will be a much more steady player at the top of the game in the years to come, but does that mean he’ll have an easy time here? That’s unlikely. Rune in 4
Casper Ruud vs Lorenzo Sonego
Shane: Casper Ruud holds a 3-0 head-to-head advantage over Lorenzo Sonego. The Norwegian has won nine of his last ten matches and seems destined to make a deep run in Paris. Sonego could give Ruud problems, but he would have to play his absolute best tennis. I do not see his current form producing that level. Ruud in 3
Damian: Lorenzo Sonego played his best match in months to dispatch Joao Sousa in straight sets. Casper Ruud is in a bit of a different league though and overcame a rough opener against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to look very comfortable against Emil Ruusuvuori again. Sonego would have to be playing as well as against Sousa and I’m not even sure if that’s sustainable against the Norwegian in the best-of-five format. Ruud in 4
