Day 2 is upon us at the ATP Bavarian International Tennis Championships in Munich, and as always we here at LWOS bring you our predictions for the action. Who do you think will win in Germany on Tuesday? We also predict the rest of the day’s matches in a separate article.
ATP Munich Day 2 Predictions
Igor Gerasimov vs John Millman
Head-to-head: first meeting
This should be a fairly even match, likely seeing Millman dictate the pace of play and Gerasimov respond. Neither is terribly proficient on clay, and Millman is favored slightly in his year-to-date performance and in previous visits to Munich. Gerasimov has only 20 tour-level matches on clay, and a couple trips to Munich without a victory. Millman doesn’t inspire me in this matchup, but he has been just a little better this year and in general, and has more experience.
Prediction: Millman in 3
Hugo Gaston vs Marcos Giron
Head-to-head: first meeting
Hugo Gaston rode a strange rollercoaster in 2021 that saw his ranking rise 100 points, as he played mostly Challengers and yet had intermittent high success, such as his quarterfinal appearance in the Paris Masters 1000 and his finals appearance in the Gstaad 250. But after a poor showing at the NextGen tournament, there hasn’t been much positive. His American opponent may be the fortuitous opportunity he needs to get back on track, however, as Giron is not accomplished on clay. It is the Frenchman’s preferred surface, although at only 21, he lacks experience. Giron is searching for his first win in two months, and although Gaston has not impressed this year, the latter’s preference for clay gives him the nod.
Prediction: Gaston in 3
Cristian Garin vs Filip Krajinovic
Head-to-head: first meeting
These two meet amidst mediocre seasons. Neither has much momentum, although Garin made the semis in Houton recently. The Chilean is usually the better player on clay, both by win percentage and by the fact that he has won five titles on the surface to the Serb’s zero. In fact, Garin won Munich in 2019. They technically have met twice, both in sub-ATP clay court events, and Krajinovic won both of them, but they were five and six years ago respectively, when Garin was quite young. Garin is a clay court specialist and a former champion, and though I hesitate to pick straight sets because he has not impressed this year, I still think he’s a much better clay-courter than his opponent.
