ATP Monte Carlo Final Prediction
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Head-to-head: Tsitsipas 2-0 Davidovich Fokina
Stefanos Tsitsipas enjoyed one of the best weeks of his career at the ATP Monte Carlo Masters in 2021. The Greek stormed into the quarterfinals without dropping a set, where he beat none other than Davidovich Fokina, albeit by retirement. That set up a semifinal clash with Dan Evans which he won for the loss of only three games. He then dismissed Andrey Rublev 6-3 6-3 to win the title.
He has looked similarly sharp so far this week. He thrashed former-champion Fabio Fognini 6-3 6-0 in the second round, after a first-round bye, before battling past Laslo Djere, 7-5 7-6, to return to the quarterfinals. He was stretched to the limit there by Diego Schwartzman, but Tsitsipas hung tough to record a 6-2 6-7 6-4 win over the Argentine. Things were more straightforward in the semifinals, where he beat second seed Alexander Zverev 6-4 6-2.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, meanwhile, arrived in Monte Carlo after a quarterfinal showing in Marrakech. He looked to have benefitted from that clay-court match practice when he beat Marcos Giron in straight sets. He backed that victory up by upsetting world #1 Novak Djokovic to record the best victory of his career to date. He followed that by dismissing David Goffin, before rallying from a set down to beat Taylor Fritz.
He then secured his place in the final by edging out Grigor Dimitrov in a three-set thriller, 6-4 6-7 6-3. Still, it’s hard to see him getting the better of Tsitsipas, however. Davidovich Fokina clearly has a bright future, but this has been a relatively kind path to a Masters final. Any victory over a player of Djokovic’s calibre is a note-worthy achievement, but the Serb was clearly not at this best, and Tsitsipas is a cut above the other four men the Spaniard has faced so far this week, especially on this surface.
