Day 4 of the ATP San Diego Open will see six matches as some of the best players in the world fight for quarterfinal spots. As always, we’re here at LWOT to offer you our thoughts on all of the matches. We look at three in this article, and three in a second article.
ATP San Diego Day 4 Predictions
Denis Shapovalov vs Taylor Fritz
This is a great matchup. Fritz’s comeback from a catastrophic injury at the French Open has been nothing short of remarkable. He’s playing strong tennis now, as he should, and is likely the best American player out there. Unfortunately for him, he’s facing off against likely the best Canadian. And in men’s tennis, at least, the top Canadian is just a hair better.
Predictions: Shapovalov in 3
Hubert Hurkacz vs Aslan Karatsev
This matchup features two players that made massive strides in 2021. Karatsev, a career journeyman at best until now, took the world by storm early in the year. He had an incredible Australian Open run followed by a breakout early season, culminating in an upset of Novak Djokovic. Hurkacz, meanwhile, won the Miami Masters back in April, and has played some incredible matches since. The switch to clay and grass seems to have stalled Karatsev’s momentum, though Hurkacz isn’t completely consistent yet either. This should be fun.
Prediction: Hurkacz in 2
Andy Murray vs Casper Ruud
Murray has provided us with great matches this year when he’s been pushed. The fight is still completely there, and the form is slowly catching up to his talent. Don’t expect the Brit to consistently challenge Top 10 players quite yet. But Ruud isn’t at his best on a hard court, and hasn’t played his best in months. This is a tremendous opportunity for the Brit.
Prediction: Murray in 2
