Best of 5 US Open Day 1 Including Tomic vs Muller

The US Open kicks off on Monday, and at least four seeds face matchups that could see them getting upset. Steen Kirby and Yesh Ginsburg offer their complete previews, with predictions.

(32)Robin Haase vs. Kyle Edmund

Steen: Haase has a h2h win against Edmund, but Edmund reached the semis in both Atlanta and Winston-Salem. Although neither is a top level tournament, it shows he’s a solid hard court player. Haase has talent but he fluked a run to the Rogers Cup semifinals and probably won’t be able to back it up in New York. Edmund in 4

Yesh: Neither of these players are particularly consistent, but Haase has the better top-level talent. He should be able to win this. Haase in 4

(19)Gilles Muller vs. Bernard Tomic

Steen: Muller leads the h2h against Tomic 4-1, Tomic hasn’t played since Wimbledon and has been battling mental health issues and a lack of motivation. Muller isn’t a top level player, but he’s consistent and he serves well enough to win almost all of his service games. Tomic isn’t consistent enough to match that. Muller in 3

Yesh: We don’t hear or see enough from Tomic anymore, except when he’s saying something seemingly stupid. He has a good return, though, and will get Gilles Muller involved in more rallies than the Luxembourg native will be comfortable with. Tomic in 4

(17)Sam Querrey vs. Gilles Simon

Steen: Simon leads Querrey 4-1 in the h2h but his form is terrible. Querrey is playing the best tennis of his career this season, Simon is a fading veteran. Look for Querrey to earn a solid win in this one. Querrey in 4

Yesh: Sam Querrey is not in great form right now, but he’s still coming off an inspiring Wimbledon and should want to do well at his home Slam. Simon is a poor matchup for him, but the Frenchman isn’t in the best form either. Querrey in 3

Daniil Medvedev vs. (Q)Denis Shapovalov

Steen: Shapovalov has only a pair of losses this summer compared to 15 wins. Medvedev played well in Washington, reaching the quarterfinals, but he’s lost four straight matches overall, and despite his own talent, Shapovalov has a bigger game and more confidence right now. Shapovalov in 3

Yesh: Shapovalov drew a talented youngster in his first match, but the rising Canadian should be able to win this match as long as he’s fit. Shapovalov in 4

(13)Jack Sock vs. Jordan Thompson

Steen: Thompson has a h2h win against Sock and has been great at the challenger level. Sock didn’t have the best of summer’s, but he’s still the heavy favorite playing at home. Sock has more power and can hit more winners than Thompson, but Thompson is a grinder who can frustrate his opponents. Sock in 4

Yesh: Jack Sock hasn’t been great recently either, and his track record at the US Open is not what he wants it to be. This is a good matchup to change those trends. Sock in 3
