Jannik Sinner and Mikael Ymer are two of the talented players in action on day 2 at the US Open in New York City. Steen Kirby, Anish Joshi, and Yesh Ginsburg offer their predictions for all of the Tuesday matches.
Maxime Cressy vs Pablo Carreno Busta
Yesh: Maxime Cressy is one of the most fun players to watch, but his game has regressed a little this summer. Carreno Busta, meanwhile, is one of the most consistent men on tour, and shouldn’t be troubled too much by Cressy’s unorthodox game. Carreno Busta in 4
Steen: Cressy qualified, his serve and volley game can be trouble. It probably won’t be for Carreno Busta though who is fantastic form, the Tokyo Bronze medalist also won Hamburg and reached the quarterfinals of his last two hard court tournaments. Carreno Busta has to be thinking about his first Grand Slam title potentially. Carreno Busta in 3
Anish: Carreno Busta made the quarterfinals at Cincinnati as well as Winston-Salem. These performances were not upto-par, as the general expectation from you is higher when you win the olympic bronze, defeating the current #1. Still, he is expected to recover, and do well at the Us Open. Maxime Cressy is more of a challeger-level player. He failed to qualify for Toronto and Cincinnati, but manged to do so here. But he isn’t ready to defeat someone of the calibre of Carreno Busta. Carreno Busta in 3
Jannik Sinner vs Max Purcell
Yesh: Sinner’s powerful game can be absolutely beastly. He’s not playing as well now as he was a year ago, but he should still blast Purcell off the court. Sinner in 3
Steen: Sinner easily won their only meeting, Purcell recently won a Challenger title, and had a decent run in Winston-Salem, Sinner won the Washington D.C. tournament, but has surprisingly struggled the rest of the Summer. Purcell could catch him by surprise, but Sinner should get the job done. Sinner in 4
Anish: Sinner dropped just one set in his run to the title at Washington. After that though, his performance dipped at Toronto and Cincinnati. Nevertheless, Sinner is an excellent hardcourt player, and will go deep in this draw. Max Purcell meanwhile is a challenger player, who only occasionally qualifies for main draws of ATP events. Sinner should face no problems moving to the second round. Sinner in 3
Mikael Ymer vs Jenson Brooksby
Yesh: Ymer is coming off an impressive final in Winston-Salem, but he got a poor matchup here. Brooksby is playing well and constantly improving, and his unorthodox game has adjusted to the main tour well. An upset is possible here. Brooksby in 5
Steen: A finalist in Newport and a semifinalist in Washington, Brooksby is playing well and would beat a lot of players right now, the trouble is Ymer is also playing great, with a final in Winston-Salem, and going 9-4 since Wimbledon. This match should be a battle, Ymer may be fatigued so I’ll go with Brooksby to survive. Brooksby in 5
Anish: Jenson Brooksby is enjoying great results in american tournamnets. He played the final at Newport, made the quarterfinal at a challenger, and then gave a tough fight to Jannik Sinner in the semifinal at Washinton. Mikael Ymer played his first hardcourt tournament after the grass season only last week, and made the final right away. The 22 year old is a very exciting prospect, and it will be interesting to see how far he can go in the draw. Ymer in 5
Egor Gerasimov vs Hubert Hurkacz
Yesh: Gerasimov is solid, but Hurkacz is another level right now. The Pole can lose any match, as he’s shown this year, but he can also beat anyone in the world on any occasion. Don’t expect him to be off his game in New York. Hurkacz in 3
Steen: Hurkacz won their only meeting and has been excellent since making a shock run to the Wimbledon semifinals. It’s been a great season for the Polish player, Gerasimov isn’t bad, but he’s 2-4 this Summer on hard courts, while Hurkacz is 5-3. Hurkacz should serve his to a win. Hurkacz in 4
Anish: Hubert Hurkacz made the quarterfinal at Toronto, before going to the third round at Cincinnati. The expectations from Hurkacz are high, understandably so, as he is the winner of one of only hardcourt masters tournaments played this year (Miami). Gerasimov hasn’t impressed largely on hardcourts. Hurkacz should win this easily. Hurkacz in 3
